The run plan was to run very easy and walk thru aid stations which hopefully give me an average pace of 10 mins per mile, I hoped to keep this up to at least half way when I expected wheels to come off and start walking. It was warm along the prom and as we headed towards airport wind was in our faces. Great support for first bit, but then it gets a bit lonely along airport but very windy and hard work. Turned round at around 6.5 miles and back to Pd Carmen, With lack of run training started to feel weak in the legs but managed to get back thru half way in around 2 hrs 20 mins which would be around 10 hrs 45 race time. Then its back towards airport into wind and pace was dropping and it felt good to walk, so I walked a bit and jogged a bit and feet were getting blistered and it was not fun any more. But it suddenly dawned on me that I was not going to dnf for the first time since 2012. Hit the turn round point and back to see supporters who were doing a sterling job outside Ruta 66. I started last lap with 12 hours 5 mins on race clock, I wasnt capable of running then and could only manage a jog/walk stategy and continued this out to turn round point and back to finish." You are an Iornman" are there any better word, always nice to hear. Finished in 13.27, I still think I have a sub 13 in me on this course, just need to do a bit of run training. Wandered home home, shower, grabbed a pizza and watched end of race, Great day all round
I had a leisurley transition trying to get rid of sand and started bike with 1 hr 15mins on clock. I saw Mrs Foggy and shouted to her that I would be back in 7 hrs give or take 5 mins.
I got overtaken by loads of people on the hills as I tried to moderate effort, but ended up overtaking others on the flats and down slopes. I tried to keep a steady effort all way round. Whichever way you look at it 112 miles in Lanzrote is never easy, with the hills and the wind, luckily it never got too hot and was almost a little chilly in overcast conditions at the north of the island.I enjoyed the return from Mirador del Rio with wind on back, nearly got 50mph down the hill. The road near Nazaret gets worse and was strewn with drinks bottles. I rolled back into town with 8hrs 15 mins on clock with just the run to deal with.
I rolled up In Lanza and kept a low profile. Another dnf would result in instant retirement and me going home with tail firmly between legs.
Night before race had a great sleep and did not feel nervous at all. I tried to get near front of swim start but too crowded and started behind where I wanted to be. Swim was a battle all way round kept getting kicked and hit most of way round. At halfway point looked at clock and I thought it said 37 minutes, oh pants. Looked again and it was 32.20, game on. Second lap more of same kicking and hitting, but kept head down and swam. 2nd lap was 34 minutes as I stated to get a little tired.
