I am not thin or fit because I'm "lucky".

You too can be "lucky" like me if you want - all you have to do is watch what you eat and drink and swim, bike and run for hours every week.

All sorts of opinions on this I'm sure.

For most people, from beginner to elite, cycling can be sustained at a higher speed for a longer than running and hence I conclude that it requires less effort to cycle than to run.

Whether 4 hous of cycling makes you "fitter" than 2 hours of running? Hmm, that is very dependant on what your definition of "fitness" is.

@singleton im concerned im not doing enough! but thanks for your advice

That's what I thought initially, but then you were asking about

"whether this is entirely essential and whether I can 'get away with squatting less"

Which confused me.

Avit - Are you concerned that you're not doing enough strength training, or are you trying to get away with doing less?

It may be beneficial to do more reps with a lower weight - e.g. instead of doing 10 reps of 70kg, you could do 15 reps of 60kg - but it depends on your size, build, goals etc.

I'd agree - stick with what you know and are used to. Personally, I'd even be wary of changing to a new and unworn pair of the Inov8's at this stage.
