I'm thinking of getting a watch but as I'm only working towards 5k (TBH I could probably manage one) is it a bit poncy or is one really needed?

I'm new to running so not an expert in any way but I went to my local Up & Running store in Leeds and they gave me really great advise. I'd find my nearest specialist running retailer and go and ask them. I'm sure they will put you on the right track shoe wise.
