Thanks SuperCaz,

I'm due to run on Sunday so I'll have a play around a little.

I've only be running around the village so it's been completely pavement running.  I wouldn't say I've been trying to go fast, my running is barely faster than my walking pace but then I am a fast walker so I'll test out some softer ground and steady myself a bit.

Sorry if I sound stupid but, what do you mean by "If I'm following the C25K then I'm not doing enough running that my gait is significant?"

Thank you

Emily

Hello,

I'm new to running, I've started the C25k plan and completed day 3 of week 1 tonight.

I started running in June 2011 but suffered shin splints & haven't been since.  In hindsight, I absolutely did not start running in the right way thought.

This time I've done a full warm up & cool down & followed the guidance of the beginner plan.

I'm already starting to get som discomfort when running in the lower shin of both legs.  It's not a pain as such, just a dull, heavy discomfort...definately feels in the shin.  It hasn't made it impossible to run but 1/2 way round it does get quite intense and almost hard to keep going.  I can really feel the pressure when my feet hit the ground.

I've used an ice pack this evening to see if that helps.  The discomfort eases when I stop running but remains present in a very mild way.

I'm struggling to know what pain/aches are normal and to be expected and what is actually out of the norm.  I don't want to stop if this is normal but don't want to keep puhing on if I'm actually doing damage.

It may be worth mentioning I have severely flat feel with a prominent in-step & I have a weak right knee from having my cartilage removed when I was 11.  However, I have got some proper running shoes as I had my gait assessed and these are new.

Any advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Emily xx

Evening newbies...

I'm also a fellow newbie, did my first run (or attempt) last Sunday.

I've put so much weight on over the last 18 months and I'm now at my biggest weight (13st 12lbs) which for a 5ft2" female is a good 3-4 stone overweight.

So, this year I want to shift at least 3 stone & tone up so I decided to give running a go.

I'm really unfit & although I've done loads of exercise in the past, I haven't done any for almost 8-9 months.  I tried to start running June 2011 but it went terribly wrong, and I ended up suffering with shin splints which completey put me off & I haven't tried it since.  Well, not until now.

I have downloaded the Couch 2 5K app on my i-phone & with some additional guidance from a runner friend I started following the plan last week.  Just completed day 3 of week 1 today.

I'm not sure how well I'm going to do as I've already started feeling some discomfort in my lower shins again (currrently sat with an ice pack on whilst typing), and I don't know what pain is normal & what isn't.

Next run is Sunday but I'm ggoing to repeat week 1 I think.

Good luck everyone, it'll be great to keep track of how everyone get on.

So today was day 1...I went to a local cricket park with a friend who already runs upto 10k & she guided me through what was day 1 of the Couch to 5k (or beginners training plan) from RW.

We did a 5min stretch warm up & brisk walk then did 60sec run followed by 90sec walking, which we repeated 8 times for 20 mins followed by 5 mins cool down.

I survived but I won't lie, it's not something I would explain as being enjoyable. my legs ached & I was massively out of breath but, I did my best & I will be doing day 2 on Tues.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi Debra,

Firstly, good luck with getting going.  I am also new to running, in fact, I haven't actually started yet but it is my 2013 resolution.

I started last year but very quickly suffered with shin spints which completely put me off so, 17months on I still haven't given it another go.  Tomorrow is my 1st day getting started.

I'm looking at joining a beginners running club in my home town (Doncaster) but until I do, my friend who already runs is going to try and help me get going.  I'm a little nervous as I am terribly unfit & overweight at the moment and, I've previously had a meniscectomy which means my knee is not fully cushioned when I run.

I'm going to be turning to RW for lots of support & guidance. What have you been doing so far?
