I have somehow had an epiphany and want to try a triathlon - I have a racing bike, local pool and have run a number of marathons in the past and what the hell I'd like to try something different!

Some questions if you can help please......

1. Average cost of triathlons -seems to range from £35 upwards, what is the average cost?

2. Do I need any extra insurance, triathlon being presumably a hazardous activity?

3. Will running shoes and toe clips be ok to start with? (bike is a raleigh record sprint)

4. Are there any triathlon races that are particularly beginner friendly?

5. Is there any book you would recommend for beginners that outlines the basics?

Any help on these questions would be much appreciated -ta for looking!

unfortunately due to the nature of my work (at sea) I could only get on to the web just after six to find out the ballot has closed.

Without sounding sour grapes I think the ballot system is a complete load of b*ll*cks cos unless you are able to be by a computer during the day you have no chance. I much prefer the old postal ballot system which seemed to be a lot fairer. I'm sure there were others like me who did not have the luxury of being able to log on in the early hours or have access to a computer (difficult getting an internet connection in the middle of the channel)

Stuff London -I will go for another marathon that has a fairer entry system!

Hello Sean,

For some reason when I tried looking for the new forum using the address given my computer comes up with "page not found". I am using Windows Vista Premium

Having used the forums for a number of years one aspect of the forum posts that really p*sses me off is the ones that presumably started out with good intentions but have just ended up as Blogs -have a look in the general forum and you'll see what I mean -the ones with twenty thousand replies or so! Its a pain in the butt having to troll through these to get to the "real" forum stuff -perhaps they should be "locked" after a while as they no longer pertain to the original subject of the thread or make a special catergory for them.

Excellent race as always, although I overheated on the last three miles along the prom -boy was it warm! The only gripe I would have was a some near collisions with people either suddenly deciding to stop in front of me or being totally engrossed in their mp3 players and oblivious to everything else.(got a bit cheesed off with it after the fifth time) But then again with nigh on 5000 runners it is bound to happen. I liked the addition of the new "loop" as opposed to the old one by the fishing huts -somehow I found it a bit easier. Talking of fishing huts "popeye's" face must be aching by now given all that gurning he had to do!
