Well done Lev, cracking result for a Tuesday lunchtime!
Congratulations to all, especially Electric Sheep and RockHopper Penguin for achieving sub-3's.
My own race was pretty uneventful, which is generally positive in marathon running since unforeseen events are rarely helpful.
Going in to the race I was a bit unsure about my fitness having only got back to consistent training since December. I was aiming to run 6:40 min/miles off the championship start, so had runners streaming past me for the first 6 miles or so. Despite trying really hard to hold back my pace I went through halfway in 1:26:33 so was about a minute up on my schedule. There were a couple of niggles around 15m but generally it was pretty comfortable and I was pleased to get to 20m mostly so I could stop holding myself back. Once I did, I didn't actually speed up much but could focus on picking off groups along the embankment. Mile 25 was a bit tough, but I managed a strong finish for 2:53:17, passing 136 and getting passed by 13.
I'll be looking for an autumn marathon next, probably Chester, to build on this performance to get back under 2:45. Then next year hopefully I'll be in shape for another 2:3x attempt.
I mentioned briefly before, but one of the guys from a local club (Wesham) managed to get a supporting role in Paula's run and has since been enjoying local celebrity with TV and radio interviews. He caught up with her at 20m and said that once the men's race had finished the camera bikes came back to focus on Paula from about 21m. At which point he had to hang on in there rather than bomb out live on TV. He then cemented his 15mins of fame by holding hands with her down the Mall.
Well, feet up now and ready to go. Meal at Zizzis and a large peroni to aid relaxation.
I agree with those not enjoying the expo. I've only ever been on a Saturday, but it' just feels too busy, no bargains to be had compared to internet shopping and no free beer to be sampled (although there is a voucher). Frankly, it's a chore.
Good luck all, particularly those looking break sub-3 for the first time. Looking forward to the results and reports. DBS
