Follower of this thread for past year or so since first marathon, ran first VLM yesterday and managed a 2:46 - chuffed with a 7min PB but pacing showed I've got a lot to learn at this distance. Wheels came off about 22m where I drifted from 6.15-6.20 m/m (on for sub-2.45) out to 6.40-6.50!
Mr Boat particularly interesting to read your report as I think I was around you for a fair while but your pace was far steadier than mine and you kicked on when I was going backwards.
Quick question on VLM - anybody else find the crowds tiring? I know a lot of people find it energising but for some reason it felt almost tiring at times, could just be the fact I was tired too!
Yorkshire Plodder - I'm hoping to crack 3 hrs using the 18/55 plan at Chester , how did you find it for London? A lot of the sub 3 chat seems to be based off the 55-70 plan so didn't know if it was too ambitious 'only' using the 55 one.
Been dipping in and out of here for a few months with the aim of, hopefully going sub 3 at Chester later this year. (Appreciate though, as mentioned a number of pages ago, picking a target so far out isn't necessarily based of the best knowledge).
Started reading through the P&D plans and currently trying to work out whether I go for the 55-70 as I've seen others on here have, or stick with up to 55 and revise my target time a little.
Current mileage is 40mpw so I'm a little nervous that jumping up to max of 70 will lead to disaster. Especially given no history of that mileage at any point. 5k and 10k times are in line with what I've read as baseline requirements (sub 17:30 and sub 37 reapectively). HM needs some work but expecting that to drop from 87 as a by product of the marathon training (naive maybe?!).
any thoughts based on the wealth of experience here?
