Saucony Progrid Ride 3
Posted: 01/10/12
'A very capable shoe. Used these and the previous 2's to run two London marathons without any issues at all.'
Strengths:
Great straight out of the box, I've done 10+ miles as a first run in these and had no difficulties. Comfortable snug fit, although I do have slightly wide feet, always had enough toe-box room. I have high arches which can be a problem in other shoes though these cope ammirably. The 2's can be picked up fairly cheaply at online discount websites.
Weaknesses:
Tend not to be too durable, however I am 'Heavy for a distance runner' (13 Stone) as I've had pointed out to me at various races, I still get 500 miles out of them. They aren't really grippy enough for true cross country, but then they aren't advertised as such.
Overall:
I like these shoes and have had 4 pairs for two London marathons, including training of course, and I would definitely use them again in future.

Saucony GRID Trigon 4 Ride

'A GREAT ROAD GOING SHOE, PLENTY OF COMFORT AND CUSHIONING'
Strengths:
A great ride. At nearly 85kgs these shoes provide a fantastic level of cushioning and comfort, but when you decide to put the hammer down and bend on some speed they respond like a pair of racing slicks and allow you to really go for it! Very responsive.

The fit is snug without being restrictive in any way. The mesh upper allows the foot to remain cool even in the summer heat (huh??), no seriously I do most of my running during the hottest part of the day and the shoes work well at keeping the feet cool.

I've not had any blistering even after a 2 hour run, I'm looking forward to my first marathon in them.
Weaknesses:
The only thing I can think of is that I have quite wide feet and these shoes fit perfectly, so anyone with very narrow feet may find problems with excessive movement in the toe box.
Overall:
Whatever changes have been made between this shoe and the Trigon 3's may well have been subtle but where the 3's are good these are great.

Nike Sphere T-shirt
Posted: 29/06/07
'GREAT FABRIC, LONG LASTING AND FANTASTIC COMFORT.'
Strengths:
The top has flat-sewn seams to prevent chafing and rubbing, and even though I always run with an hydration pack I have never suffered with chafing caused by the shirt. It has reflective strips at the back which aids running in low light conditions. There are also perforated inserts at the armpits to help with air flow in that area. The main body is shaped to fit, with the tail end being slightly longer and it has great wicking capability. The top is warm in the winter and keeps you cool in the summer.
Weaknesses:
The only reason someone might not like this top is because it is 'fitted' (i.e. body-shaped) and it might not hide the more prominent belly!
Overall:
When I started running, like most beginners I simply used an old cotton T-shirt. The Nike Sphere Dri-fit top was the first technical shirt I ever bought and I’ve never regretted the decision to buy it, even though I paid full price for it!

In fact it was bought on the day of my very first race (a number of years ago) and as you can imagine the top has developed its own distinctive aroma but, and this is the point, it is still going strong - a testimony to its manufacture!

In short, a great T-shirt.

Mizuno Wave Creation 7

'GREAT SHOE ONCE YOU GET PAST THE INITIAL 'STIFF' FEELING!'
Strengths:
A heel box that is very snug and close fitting. Loads of room in the toe box. Smooth transition from heel to toe. Very well ventilated bnecause of the light mesh uppers.
Weaknesses:
Strictly a road shoe, there is no off road capability because of the open waves in the heel. These shoes seem to be quite heavy but then it's supposed to be a top of the range cushioned shoe and you do get a lot of shoe for the money.
Overall:
Looking at some of the comments made here by others I'm curious to know if those having problems with the creations are the heavier or lighter runners?

I normally weigh in at 84kgs!

I agree with the comments about the shoes feeling 'stiff' initially, but they do feel better after a few miles, for me that was about 100! The crucial point with this is that regardless of how they felt I had no problems with old injuries recurring so they must have been doing their job effectively!

My first run in these shoes was nearly two hours without any sign of blisters or other problems, so this gives you their true measure!

Saucony Grid Triumph 2
Posted: 01/03/07
'NO BLISTERS, COMFORTABLE, GOOD SUPPORT, GREAT CUSHIONING.'
Strengths:
I picked these up at a bargain price after the triumph 3 came out. The shoe performs well at all distances from 10K to marathon, without giving you hot spots or blisters, which means a good fit, which is evident in the amount of support you feel all around the foot.
Weaknesses:
As a 'heavier' distance runner (approx 85kg) I found that the cushioning had worn by about 350 miles, if I'd paid full price for them I might have been a little disappointed.
Overall:
A great all round shoe, if you can buy them they should be an absolute bargain buy!

'GOOD VALUE ALL ROUNDER!'
Strengths:
Great fit, lightweight and good cushioning.
Weaknesses:
The shoes feel slightly 'stiff' when you first put them on, but this disappears as soon as you start running.
Overall:
My first run in these shoes was 1.5 hours on the road with no ill effects.
I recently used them to do a hill climb of 5000ft in 1.5 hours on road and gravel track and they performed admirably.
I bought these when on special offer as an alternative to Nike Pegasus and they do the job very well.

Nike Triax C5 - SM0015001
Posted: 08/03/06
'UNCOMPLICATED, FUNCTIONAL AND STYLISH, BUT POOR AFTER SALES.'
Strengths:
The C5 performs well within its functionality. It is easy enough for the user to replace both batteries (transmitter and watch) and both pieces of the HRM are comfortable to wear. The chest strap fits snugly, doesn’t move much when in use, and is easily cleaned. I’ve found the watch/receiver unit to be particularly durable; including DIY, canoeing, climbing, on the beach etc.

The decent styling means you don’t feel out of place wearing it for general use. The buttons are generally easy to use. It has a goodly amount of basic functions, and as an added bonus the transmitter interacts with Gym equipment.
Weaknesses:
Although most buttons generally work well, the ‘clear all’ button can be difficult to use. The C5 has limited functionality (although this could be seen as a strength, because it makes it less complicated to use).
The biggest ‘downer’ with this bit of kit was the after sales care from Nike UK. The HRM was bought as a gift for me during February 2004. Within 9 months the transmitter started to malfunction; this was because moisture had made it past the sealing ring and had wet the electronic components (imagine it strapped to your chest in mid summer during a tempo run!).
I contacted Nike immediately, who put me in touch with their repair company, who wouldn’t touch the HRM because we couldn’t find the receipt. I contacted Nike again who basically said ‘Unlucky’.
The following March (2005), this was now 13 months after the purchase, we found the receipt, neither Nike nor the repair company would allow replacement or repair of the HRM, because it was ‘out of warranty’.
If you’re on a tight budget this is quite disheartening!
Overall:
I really do like this product; it worked well and looks pretty good. It did everything I wanted it to. If you want SDM or large data storage there are numerous other products available, but as a decent HRM this one was king for me.
But the response from the company made it exceptionally expensive, approx £70 for 9 months use!!
I’ve been without a HRM since November 2004, but my training is taking a serious turn and I’d like another HRM; next time though I’ll be voting with my wallet. Entry level all the way!!
