Garmin Forerunner 201
Posted: 08/03/06
'EXCELLENT RANGE OF USEFUL FUNCTIONS; LARGE DATA STORE'
Strengths:
Versatile range of displays including customisable screen; virtual partner very useful; good for interval training; sound and visual alerts for a large variety of distances and/or times and paces. Excellent after sales service and backup software. Definitely value for money.
Weaknesses:
Audible alerts not loud enough especially where there is vehicular traffic and loudness cannot be adjusted. Interval mode "throws away" the recovery times and distances. Takes quite a while to lock onto satellites. Velcro wrist strap rather stiff.
Overall:
Excellent and reliable piece of equipment, transforms your running experience. I definitely wouldn't be without it and love the freedom of running wherever I fancy knowing time, distance and route are being recorded for me. Large memory means I can look back over previous runs. Backup software enables in depth analysis and comparison of performances. I bought my first FR201 in Jan 2004 and was very pleased with it. It locked up inexplicably after about 18 months and the Garmin Customer Support team advised me of various ways to unlock it. Unfortunately it could not be reset so they replaced it at no charge even though the guaratee period had expired by about 6 months. That's what I call service! ! ! The replacement has exhibited no problematic behaviour.
