New Balance 1064
Posted: 16/03/10
'well-padded, neutral, but, as the testers say, not very responsive'
Strengths:
Lots of padding, locking laces, solid-feeling contact means I don't feel like I'm about to slip over on corners
Weaknesses:
Hot, lack of feedback from the ground, too much flare on the heel section of the sole means I catch my calves. Locking laces means that you have to be careful not to do them up too tight.
Overall:
Not a bad shoe as such. But not the kind of off-the-shelf impressive ride I thought I was in for after shelling out £90 and spending an hour in the shop (I should have stuck with my old Sauconys). In fairness, the 1064s are only the second pair of 'proper' running shoes I've ever owned and I have only done 20 miles in them so far. With luck, they'll bed in, but I'm not sure they'll get better ventilated - perhaps the sizes come up a bit large and what I'm suffering is heat from friction as my foot moves about.
As I say, not a bad shoe that other, perhaps heavier, runners may enjoy as solid and dependable. But it isn't going to set the world alight.
