In short: Fantastic First Fell Race In full: As we approached Brecon the rain was incessant, not the best start to my first Fell Race. By the time we got to the start the mountain gods smiled on us and we were basking in sunshine.
The route was hard and if I'm honest harder than I expected even though I have previously done lots of hill walking.
I knew that I would lose time on the descent compared to experienced runners, I hadn't realised just how hard on the legs it would be or for that matter, my backside!! I did slip a few times but this just added to the fun.
The organisation was simple but very good and very welcoming. They take lots of photo's that they post for you to download should you wish and home made flapjacks at the end.
Before the race started I looked at the race times for the previous three years that they had posted at the registration tent, last year's slowest time just over 1.5hrs. Hmmm I thought, if I managed that I'd be happy. I actually did it it 1hr 5mins, came last but really didn't care, it was a fantastic day and I hope to progress to do this and Fan y Big next year.
In short: Brilliant fun In full: A very funny warm up followed by a surprisingly challenging course. I'm not the worlds greatest runner but there was definitely a lot of "up"! Cammo nets, bogs and lots of mud made for a great run. My Garmin made it slightly less than 10k - 9.25
The mud was great and sliding down a hill on your belly was great fun. Will definitely be doing this again.
Has a 5k route for the novice which looked equal fun.
In short: More Muddy than a mudbath from mudland In full: First time at the Grim (my second ever race)and loved every minute of it. Despite my arthritis playing up still managed to finish in 1:27 so I was very pleased with that.
Some people don't like the fact it is actually over 8 miles (about 8.75) but this isn't a race people should take seriously. Whilst the course itself isn't that challenging, there is way too much mud for that.
I thought it was well marshalled and everyone, participants, steards & spectators were all very encouraging. I shall be returning for the Dusathlon later this year
In short: My first ever duathlon and I loved every minute of it. Never rated a race before (obviously) but certainly so good I'll be going back next year in the hope of beating my time! NIce steady run with a fairly technical (for me) MTB section k In full: My first ever duathlon and my first ever race full stop!! I loved every minute of it. Never rated a race before (obviously) but certainly so good I'll be going back next year in the hope of beating my time! Nice steady run with a fairly technical (for me) MTB section kept meant I had to keep focused or I'd end up in a ditch!
If you are thinking about it - do it you won't be disappointed. Date of review: October 11, 2010
