In short: Great hills and a fantastic new race
In full: Extreme running events are not cheap, but the organisation was good and signposts were aplenty, checkpoints were well marshalled and the route took us along the south downs way (similar to SD ultra) and through some of the most amazing scenery the downs have to offer. There were only 150ish numbers given out when I picked up mine on the day. Weather was superb and the company on the way round was just fab. There were plenty of guys using this as their first marathon and good luck to them as this was a hard last few miles, coming in at a whisker under 27. I enjoyed the 3 mile run there too! Will be back for next year, despite the steep entrance fee.

In short: well done to the gobeyond team for a fantastic race
In full: Ok, so the first 9 miles ended up taking near on 2 hours with the snow, ice, mud, driving rain, no way markers and a map that disintegrated in the rain. But so what! Any complaints about that, then you are not man, or woman enough to do this race. Great support at the checkpoints, the cake was spot on, as were the timely scotch eggs, food and a cup of tea at the finish. Technical top and medal....steve, you have done really well with the 45 miler and I will be doing your events in the future. This is exactly how ultra marathons should be run

In short: mud, mud, glorious mud......and more mud
In full: Wow! Second running of this event and second time of doing it for me. Course change from the previous year to not pass through the marsh, which, from the top of Rackham hill was the river Arun about a mile wide over the floodplain. Hard rain for the first hour did little to dampen the spirits of the doyeners although the mud below was more to contend with. The course change took us through a waterlogged ploughed field which got steeper at the top, followed by a gravel road. I must have had 2kg shoes on each foot by this time and added to that we missed a marker and did an extra 2 miles between 10 and 15. No bother though, just a bit more mud. Always great to have the race director to give out a handshake, t-shirt and shot glass at the end. Great to see Jezza, George, Mike, Martin, Capricorn, John Mac, Flynn, David and a few more besides. Will see you for round 3 next year!!

In short: what a classic!
In full: Punishment number 4 as I returned once again to the hills of hell and bogs of doom. Well it was funny to come round the corner to see a topless Gordon Ramsey removing outerwear as the day warmed up and was a complete contrast to the woeful saturday yesterday which was spent in the crazy wind and rain of the Surrey League XC! I decided that I had better get moving as after listening to Mr Ramsey turn the air (cordon) bleu with an audition for the F-word at each muddy knee-deep puddle. I am sure the course has evolved slightly over the years but it never seems any easier. The bog this year felt less imposing as the rest of the course was just soooo waterlogged. Happy though as 83 mins and shaved a minute off my fastest time here so feel in good shape. See you next year....where I will be following Mr Ramsey with a soggy cardboard swearbox!!!

In short: Fantastic XC Marathon
In full: Organisation was superb, loads of parking and toilets at the start (altho' I hear that latecomers had a raw deal as the water supply ran out!!) the first half of the course was beautiful scenery and rolling hills of the downs. Fine it seems in dry weather in road shoes. Was great to catch up with some old ultra-friends and was a friendly and positive atmosphere. Second half of the course was a bit mad at first as all of the half marathoners joined the party and there was a bit of hustle and bustle but the scenic second half and its much harder hills spread the field very quickly. Great medal and will look forward to a cider emporium at the finish next year. Well done Clarendon on a quality piece of organisation

In short: Challenging race but challenge is a good thing!
In full: was not feeling up to this after coming back from an injury but what a challenge. The lack of a marshalled or signed course bothered no one and the frienliness of the runners was superb. Why run town centre 10ks at 10 a penny when this is such a good run. The incline to the top of ditchling was cruel in the last 7 miles though! And you would not believe the amount of cider I can fit in my downland shopping bag. See you next year HHH

In short: fantastic course and day!
In full: the only slight gripe I have is that the marking of the course was a little sporadic. I came in 21st and some of the guys ahead said that they got lost twice due to inadequate signage. I almost went off course a couple of times when i could not see marshalls in front.
howver, perfect scenery, nails hills and the descents....well my quads are tender this morning. great to have juice, biscuits and cake on the way round. will be back next year to do this. well done 3FM!!

In short: we took the sting out of sunday morning
In full: Firstly, the marshalling and check points were superb and a credit to the whole of running. you got it totally right, even down to the cute little signs that said "not this way" if you took a wrong turn. Food on the way round was a great idea. scenery was stunning and as with the smaller races off road in the area, great to see some familiar faces. Slight downer....a few of us agreed that we would like a dirty fat medal for that and not a shot glass. well done and see you next year!
