In short: A fantastic Autumn blast In full: OK- there are a lot of hills. However, they are on trail, so no cars. The only hazard was tripping over dogs out on their morning stroll. Good parking, great organisation and nice cake stall (which always gets my seal of approval!). I knocked 3 minutes off my 2007 time, but it hurt. Thanks to Redhill RR for resurrecting this one. Also, results were up on the website at 15.00 on the afternoon of the race. Great service. Date of review: October 11, 2009
In short: Very well organised In full: Less hilly than previous years. Was impressed by the number of roads that were closed to traffic. Gave me the rare luxury of running up the middle of the MARR. Felt a lot safer than last year. Excellent water stations and thanks for the sponges at 6 miles. Mile 10 - 11 was horrible as you could see other runners for about a mile in front of you and it never seemed to end. Date of review: June 28, 2009
In short: Very mellow In full: Really relaxed atmosphere. Rain had softened up the trails and there were some nice muddy puddles around. Garmin measured 4.75 miles but who cares? The point to this race is running through fine countryside with nice people. They'd even opened the gates this year so we didn't have to jump over the stiles. Highly recommended. In short: Excellent as always In full: Recovering from flu, but decided to struggle round as this is one of my favourite races. A couple of interesting hills, but today I really enjoyed the long downhill after the drinks station. Thanks also to the two "unofficial" drinks stations- very much appreciated.
Fun Run was also a lot better this year with a nice lap and good viewing points- will bring my little lad along to do it next year. Date of review: May 10, 2009
In short: Excellent race In full: Ran it last year but not this year as I was supporting Mrs Diablo- it was her first 10K. Gave me a first chance to see a race from a spectator's point of view. This was an excellent course for supporters. Due to the loops of the course, we were able to watch the start, then run round to view at 6km and 7km before running back to the stadium to watch the finish. Excellent race for supporters. In short: I came for the scenery, but stayed for the cake In full: Last year I made the fatal mistake of trying to get a PB. As such, I felt sick at the end and couldn't make the most of the (free)cake stall. This year, I trotted round a couple of minutes slower and then got stuck into the cakes. Fantastic!
As for the course, the "out" half is quite undulating with lots of biggish stones underfoot. This gave me one or two blisters and you had to keep an eye on where you were going. The return half was pretty much flat and moved onto tarmac, so I reckon this is negative split territory. The only downside is the bit where you have to run down and back up the "arm" of the lake at about 6.5 miles. Seemed to go on for ages and you could see people across the water who were miles ahead of you.
Overall, an absolute gem of a race- no wonder it fills up so quickly. Date of review: April 18, 2009
In short: Hilly Carnival In full: Really enjoyed the atmosphere before the race. Great DJ and loads of things for the kids to do- bouncy castle, tombola, coconut shy, cake stall. Thanks to all the funn runners for clapping us thorugh the start- was really excellent.
Very hilly course, but some nice long downhills. I agree that the last 5km is pretty much uphill, but just grit your teeth and look forward to the barbecue at the end. Date of review: March 29, 2009
In short: Not as flat as I thought, but no great problems In full: A big long drag up a slight incline between miles 9 and 11 finished me off after I'd gone off too fast. Just managed a PB but was exhausted.
Excellent organisation. loads of easy parking and a good vibe around the clubhouse, with ice cream, bacon sarnies and things to do for the kids. Will be back next year but will respect the course a bit more. Date of review: March 22, 2009
In short: Nice morning out In full: Lots of focus on the hills, but the rest of the course was pretty flat. The hills didn't last too long if you got your arms pumping and went for it! Nice compact field and liked the stadium finish. I got a pb- either the winter training worked, or I wasn't trying hard enough on the other courses! Date of review: March 8, 2009
In short: Well worth doing In full: Very friendly, easy parking and good HQ facilities. Hills not as bad as I had feared. The one at 5 miles went on a bit but the one at 7.5 miles wasn't too bad. Knocked two minutes off my PB so more than happy. Date of review: March 1, 2009
