In short: A great event In full: This was my first marathon and it was quite a testing course. I agree with comments others have made suggesting a split start as the half`ers really got in the way as did the weaving relay runners during a chaotic first 6 miles or so. Also the tight turns, switchbacks, canal paths and the soul destroying Pierrepoint section made it a tough `part 2` added to by the warm weather in Nottingham. That said, the crowd support was great and the supplies of water and Lucozade were in abundance and there was plenty for the family to do back at the race base whilst I toiled for 4 hours in the sun!
Although it is quite expensive (especially if you bought a t-shirt), the goody bag, support and medal were befitting of the event and the RHM is a credit to its city. Date of review: September 14, 2010

In short: A hilly tour of countryside near Chesterfield In full: So long as you`re fit enough to get up the 3 miles of progressive hills in decent shape, you`re rewarded with some flat and plenty of steady downhills (I ran the second half of the race 4 minutes quicker than the first!).
The marshalls were really encouraging on a nasty weather day and the t-shirt given to finishers was high quality. A really nice race. Date of review: August 29, 2010

In short: Riverside bargain In full: I didn`t receive much in the way of instructions or directions after entering (through RW) and it was a very local race with a field consisting largely of athletes from local clubs.
The route followed the river down a lovely leafy track before a mile or so on the with a bit of a hill. Then it returned to country tracks and paths with a really quick downhill section and then you rejoin the river path back.
There were plenty of water stations and the marshalls were quite encouraging. However, at the finish one was rude to my wife which spoilt our experience somewhat.
The race was inexpensive to enter but a medal was given plus a t-shirt (albeit from a previous, New Year, event.) I would consider doing this again in the future. Date of review: August 2, 2010

In short: Undulating run out to Hardwick Hall and back In full: A bit of a gem this one!
Lots of Pilsley village seemed to be out watching the race that involved about 130 runners. The vast majority of competitors were in clubs but there were a few brave souls from the village competing aswell.
The route climbs out of Pilsley for the first mile before dipping and then a huge climb upto the beautiful Hardwick Hall. Coming back meant trotting back down the hill them a steady climb before a fast finish in the village.
Lots of support and plenty of folk out on the route offering cups of water plus a nice medal for finishing. A lovely way to spend a Thursday evening. Date of review: July 16, 2010

In short: Testing course with a tough finish In full: The pre-race info was a bit sparse and there didn`t seem to be any signs to the event. Really I ought to have known how the event would go for me when I was allocated number 666!). However, the base at Berry Hill was nice and the atmosphere was really good with a big fun run also happening. The course was very hilly and that plus the hot weather resulted in lots of people walking and quite a few dropping out. The marshalls were excellent and their encouragement was really appreciated on such a harsh day. Also the t-shirt received for finishing was of high quality rather than the usual white cotton efforts. I would do this again but only if it was 10 degrees cooler! Date of review: June 28, 2010

In short: A nice setting for a race In full: The morning had seen very heavy showers, thunder and lightening. However, by the time the race started, it was very warm, humid and muggy but with plenty of puddles to dodge. The course was a double loop with extra bits and the K markers were nice and clear. Marshalls were pretty good and, all in all, it was a pleasant way to spend a Sunday morning. Date of review: June 6, 2010

In short: A good Yorkshire race but Sheffield is better! In full: On the positives. Slickly organised with quite a few drink stations (needed on a very warm day), good info pack, nice start location (although way too crowded), lovely marshalls (offering sponges, water, and high 5 drink), result texted promptly and a testing route through the better parts of Leeds. Negatives were it`s crowded (the square was much too full) and a very tight start, and the section around 7 miles is too tight to overtake unless you go on the grass verge, and I didn`t get a drink in my goody bag which surprised me after being offered them at all drinks stations. Although I prefer the Sheffield race with its great stadium start, I got a PB and enjoyed my visit to a nice city. Date of review: May 9, 2010

In short: Sheffield really is a great sporting city! In full: I did this with my wife and we loved it!
Being based at Don Valley ensures a magnificent uplifting start and finish to this great race. A real mixture of runners were very well catered for by the army of marshalls, helpers and supporters. The route includes a trip through the heart of Sheffield past the international pool, the Big Wheel and the Crucible Theatre before being rewarded by an excellent goody bag to go home with.
We will definitely make this race a fixture on our calendar! Date of review: April 28, 2010

In short: Worth doing if you know what to expect In full: Having done the race last year, I knew that it would involve 3 twisty laps of a course that wriggled around the Don Valley Stadium with a couple of short, sharp inclines and the chance to blast a lap or 3 on the track of the biggest athletics stadium in Britain. It is also worth knowing that there are no kilometre or mile markers to be seen although there are plenty of marshalls to make the course clear.
I entered on-line and didn`t receive anything through the post but rather I got a last minute email 2 days before the event to give me the information that I needed. This year I thought the event was better because it was a part of the Sheffield athletics festival which brought quite a good amount of spectators by the time we were finishing. It also attracted a couple of big name female runners.
For your money, you get a very quick (by South Yorks standards) course with PB potential and the chance to run at a tremendous stadium plus a festival t-shirt. I`ll (probably) be back. Date of review: April 21, 2010

In short: A tough ten miler! In full: After a nice first couple of miles, we were then faced with some long hills and sharp declines making this a great challenge but certainly not one for PB chasers.
Thankfully the scenary is great so you occasionally could forget about the pain you were feeling and, we got so high up, I could see the sea! Parking was OK and the marshalls were good generally but the medal was the same for the fun run and the 10 miler. However, the race is a cheap one and the extra water station before the last big hill was a nice surprise. Calder Vale is a lovely isolated village setting for this testing Lancashire treat.
