In short: Very disappointing in certain areas, but I still enjoyed it In full: First of all the bad points:
Very congested. I was in the 1:45-2 hours pen and was still getting held up in the last mile. Also had to avoid someone walking at mile 4 - what were they doing so far forward?? I was aiming for 1:45 and when I realised the first mile had taken me 8 1/2 minutes I knew that was out of the equation. Hence the low PB potential.
An 8-10 week delay on the t-shirt is simply not good enough. I booked a holiday for the week after the race and was looking forward to wearing it while I'm away. (Yes, I really am that sad).
Cobbles. Enough said.
A plastic bag with a can of soup in it does NOT constitute a goodie bag. In a quiet moment, would someone please explain that to the organisers.
Early start. Having to get up at 5.30 on a Sunday to travel from Swindon is just not my bag, baby. Having said that, finishing before 11:30 does help avoid the mid-day heat and allow more time for post-race "refreshments".
Personally it was a terrible race for me. I have had a sore hamstring for a while and in the 11th mile it "went". How I managed to hobble the last few miles and still finish in 1:50 is beyond me. I guess that's when you found out what you are made of.
On the plus side: Very nice medal, excellent runners' village and baggage storage, drinks stations, free lucozade and the park and ride went a lot better than I expected. Crowd support was fantastic and I do enjoy these big city events so may well be back again. Date of review: September 10, 2007
In short: Another great race by PVRC In full: Pretty much the same as last year, except no PB this time. Probably my own fault for pacing it badly. Long, steep hill in the fourth mile but nothing too challenging besides that. Well organised and well marshalled, thanks to all concerned. Only slight criticism is that an energy drink station or two would have been good. Nice t-shirt this time as well.
Will definitely be back next year. Date of review: August 28, 2007
In short: Definite PB potential, and a surprisingly pleasant run In full: Thought I would give this race a go as it could be one I use on a regular basis to check my progress. Had also heard the goodie bag is very good!
When I arrived I was afraid this could be the most boring race ever, three laps of a racing circuit..hmm..
In the end it was a pleasantly surprising run, nice to be free of traffic and fumes for a change. Was cruising for the first 6-7k and can't understand why I didn't get a PB, I guess the extreme heat must have put paid to that.
The goodie bag was nice and value for money but not quite what I was expecting. I have to say I have never seen "official finisher" t-shirts being given out before the race has started!
Organisation was top notch, directions to the race could have been better, but I liked the way we were given clear instructions during the briefing.
Good mix of runners, I made a point of staying to clap the slower runners over the line. It would be boring if we all ran a 40-minute 10k!
Won't be back in November as it clashes with the Downton half (one of my favourites) but fully intend to do this one again. Date of review: August 6, 2007
In short: Highly enjoyable mid-week run In full: Entered this event with the intention of using it as a good hard training run, which I did.
Very scenic, undulating course. The downhills compensate for the uphill stretches so some PB potential there, but unfortunately my downhill running needs some work so couldn't manage a PB. But quite pleased with my time all things considered.
Well marshalled course apart from the last little bit through the car park (as mentioned by Liz Gard). That needs to be improved so runners can put on a sprint at the end.
Liked the choice of memento, bottle of beer, shot glass or bum bag. I went for the beer - and very tasty it was too.
Will definitely do this one again - same as the other PVRC races I have done. Date of review: August 2, 2007
In short: Wonderful run through the aboretum, but spoilt by one or two things In full: This is a wonderful run through the Westonbirt aboretum and a lovely way to spend a Monday evening.
The course has a few minor undulations but nothing too challenging so definite PB potential. Unfortunately there were far too many entrants (I believe there were 535 finishers so I imagine they allowed 550-600 entrants) for a relatively small event.
I was also disappointed at the rather aggressive marshall who was shouting at and even manhandling people (so I heard) at the end to stay in position. I know it is his job to keep people moving but there are ways and means. To be shouted at when you have just finished a race is not acceptable.
Liked the memento, a nice sapling and a pretty wooden coaster - nice reminder of a very pleasant evening.
Shame the next run at Westonbirt is the day before the Bristol half marathon, so not an option for me. Date of review: July 2, 2007
In short: Fantastic event, well done to all concerned In full: Can't praise this event too highly. Yes it is hilly, but the worst is over in the first mile, and the scenery more than compensates for the challenges.
Well supported and very well marshalled, many thanks to all those who spurred us on in the rain! Plentiful water and sponge stations were a great precaution against warmer weather.
I complained last year about only receiving a mug, but this year the memento was the best I've ever had, a lovely paperweight in a nice presentation box. It will take pride of place on my desk!
Well done Bourton roadrunners, see you next year. Date of review: July 2, 2007
In short: Highly enjoyable mid-week run In full: As I have stated previously, I use this route as a training run, so a bit "same old, same old" for me. Hence I don't find the scenery that inspiring.
That notwithstanding, really enjoy this friendly event. Not really a PB course because of the congestion at the start and the long gradual climb in the fifth mile. Pleased that I managed to knock a couple of minutes off my time from last year.
Like getting a t-shirt at the end, design was the same as last year but a much better colour (white stains too easily!)
Thanks to all the marshalls and supporters. As long as I live in this area I'll be back every year. Date of review: June 14, 2007
In short: Nice day out with PB potential In full: Very disappointed to get a worse time than last year - whether that is due to recent illness or general lack of hard training since London, I don't know.
Definite PB potential but the lack of interesting scenery makes the event tough psychologically.
That downside notwithstanding, a great day out for the family - was personally thrilled that my father came to watch me race for the first time today!
Organisation generally very good, more water stations this year and friendly supporters, nice to get a medal this time as well! Date of review: June 2, 2007
