In short: Fantastic event that puts many others to shame In full: Only my second x-country race and I think I will now be a regular at these events, certainly at the sodbury slog. Never thought I'd have so much fun getting wet, cold and muddy!
Can't fault the organisation, very impressed with the number of marshalls who showed up on the day. Superb value for money, more than decent goodie bag and excellent long sleeved t-shirt, just the job for winter training. Ran round at the back with a mate and there were plenty left when we finished.
The minute's silence on rememberance Sunday was also a nice touch.
EXCELLENT event - other race organisers please take note. This is how it should be done. Date of review: November 13, 2006
In short: Could have been much better In full: Enjoyable run, nice scenery apart from a trip round an industrial estate and well supported despite the rain. Unfortunately the experience was spoilt by a lack of water stations (only at the 5 and 11 mile markers). Three or four should be a minimum and had it been warmer I think people would have been passing out! Other major disappointment was the t-shirts. The fact that they were not included in the entry fee is bad enough, but when I finished they were sold out! My race time was 1:54 and there were plenty behind me so obviously not enough were ordered. That was a real shame because they looked nice, long sleeved, just the job for winter. I think most runners would rather pay a couple of quid extra and get a worthwhile training top. Medal not bad though. Date of review: October 23, 2006
In short: Excellent race, some improvements from last year In full: Very well organised event, improvements from last year include seedings in the runners' pen, baggage tent, and free massage service. Good to see a lot of local people taking part. Challenging course but beautiful scenery. Well supported and marshalled, plenty of water stations but could have done with some lucozade as well. Nice medal, t-shirt and a mars bar at the end! Date of review: October 18, 2006
In short: Can't understand why this race doesn't attract more runners. In full: This is the first event I had competed in for the second year. I enjoyed it last year, and even more this year, knocking 7 minutes off my time!
Very well organised event, extremely friendly crowd - good cross section of ages and abilities. Kids fun run makes it a day out for the whole family, so I really cannot understand why there are so few participants. Banana and t-shirt at the end was great but mars bar last year was better!
Tough course but glorious scenery makes it worth while. Steep descent for last 2k makes it a bit treacherous however.
Will definitely be back next year. Thanks also to Dave J for asking me to come on BBC wiltshire radio with him! Date of review: September 12, 2006
In short: Good run through lovely scenery, perfect for a bank holiday weekend. In full: Very much enjoyed this event, scenery was fantastic, course mildly undulating but nothing too severe. Well marshalled and supported, only complaint was having to pick up race no on the day. Good t-shirt at the end and was able to get my hands on a copy of marathon news at last. Also managed to knock 6 mins off my pb so ideal warm-up for my first marathon in 3 weeks' time! Date of review: August 28, 2006
In short: Well organised, scenic but challenging race. In full: Thoroughly enjoyed the event - bit disappointed with my time (tried to get under 50 mins but the hill at 5k put paid to that). Good mix of runners, nice range of abilities so would suit beginners. Very social - beer and burger at the end was a nice touch, even if queue for burger was a bit long. Only reservation about coming next year is that it's quite a trek from where I live and I travelled up on my own so would probably only come if there was a bunch of us and we made an evening of it. In short: Lovely course, organisation left a bit to be desired In full: Enjoyed this event, lovely scenery and very friendly atmosphere. Gently undulating, no major hills. May do again for scenery, but organisation could have been better - at the end we were being hassled to move up in the queue for goodie bags (drink, banana and bag of crisps in a small plastic bag!) which would have been totally unnecessary had the goodie bags been prepared earlier! In short: When they said hilly they weren't kidding.. In full: Good, tough race, probably good for a hard weekend training run. Beautiful scenery though and well supported - lots of people lining the route to cheer us on. The marshalls were also fantastic, gave good support and plenty of water and sponge stations. Not really for beginners as such a tough course and so many club runners participating - first-timers could feel a little intimidated. Mug at the end was nice but after that race I felt I deserved a decent medal as well! Date of review: June 25, 2006
In short: Excellent and friendly mid-week event, ideal for first-timers. In full: Not really a change of scene for me as I use the route as a training run! But well organised, well marshalled, well attended and well supported! Very friendly atmosphere and a great midweek event, ideal for newcomers. Nice t-shirt at the end made a welcome change from tacky medal. Will definitely be back next year! Date of review: June 14, 2006
In short: Very friendly event, well worth the effort. In full: Disappointed with my own performance, but the event was worthwhile. Challenging but scenic, just how I like my races. Only complaint was the mile markers, or rather the lack of them - didn't spot any until 3 miles. But good value, and nice to see a broad range of abilities. Mug at the end made a nice change, a momento that serves a useful purpose instead of a tacky medal that sits in a drawer. Date of review: May 29, 2006
