In short: Who needs London? In full: Organisers should give themselves a big pat on the back for this one. The route is super flat apart from some very minor undulations at Mile 1 and Mile 11, and there is definite PB potential (although not for me this time - 'flu in the week leading up to the race meant that I swiftly binned my plans of a fast time and just went and enjoyed it). The crowd support is unfaltering, and the frequent switchback sections make for some good camaraderie between fellow runners. True, the power station section isn't exactly awe-inspiring, but at least it's flat and you get to literally 'hit the Wall' before and after it - I was seriously amused by that! Must also give a special mention to the people at the water and Powerade stations - never a worry about not getting a drink. On the whole, I would definitely do it again and I'm already thinking about logistics for next year! Date of review: April 15, 2011

2009 Hanley Building Society Potters Arf Marathon

In short: The best crowd support I've ever experienced! In full: If you don't mind a few hills, then this is the race for you. The downhill stretches provide a welcome respite from the long, tough climbs, and the crowd support betters that of GNR - by a long way. I'll definitely be back next year! In short: Who needs London when you've got this one? In full: Super-slick organisation and great support from the crowds. Second lap was a bit lonely once the half-marathon people had gone though! A big PB for me by 1 hr 18 mins, but my previous PB was rubbish! Date of review: April 26, 2009

2007 Market Drayton Carnival 10k

In short: Warm and welcoming, and the T-shirt alone was worth the entry fee! In full: This was the first time I had done the Market Drayton 10K, as it is normally held on the same day as the Liverpool Women's 10K, an event I always enter. However, unless they change the date, I won't be going back to Liverpool! This is a fantastic race, for several reasons. First of all, the course. The undulations in the first two miles are fairly mild, and what goes up, as they say, must also come down. The rest of the course is beautifully flat and fast. The goody bag is also brilliant, and I love the T-shirt. But the most memorable thing about the day for me was the support from the marshalls and the spectators. I am nearly 6 months pregnant at the moment, so today for me was not about 'racing', it was about enjoying the atmosphere and keeping myself fit. I finished about 10 minutes slower than I normally would, but I had great fun, and made many friends along the way. I will be back next year to beat my PB, and in the meantime, I'm off to figure out how to spend my Müller vouchers! Date of review: May 13, 2007

2006 L1310K 10K

In short: Flat, fast and lots of leaves! In full: This new (and much improved) course made for PBs galore - I beat mine by nearly two minutes!!! The Liverpool crowd is always welcoming, and the words of encouragement kept me going through a bad patch at 6K, and made my (almost) sprint finish more bearable. As a former resident of the city, I found my way to the start easily, but the lack of directions may have proved disastrous for those unfamiliar with Liverpool. Nice chunky medal, and an understated T-shirt that I will definitely not just wear to do the weeding. This is a great race for experienced athletes and beginners alike, and it's heartening to see so many people interested in running as we continue to be bombarded with statistics about how unfit and obese we are in Britain. We need more races like this! Date of review: October 8, 2006

In short: A great initiation into the world of marathon running In full: Jelly beans on tap, friendly marshalls and great scenery. What more could you want? I had a brilliant day and despite the agony I'm in now, I will be back next year! Date of review: October 18, 2004

2004 BUPA Great North Run
 | | Overall score | | 100% | | Would you do it again? | | Yes | | | | Details: | | Scenery | | 40% | | PB potential | | 40% | | Atmosphere | | 100% | | Organisation | | 100% | | Value | | 80% | | Beginner-friendliness | | 80% |
In short: If you need motivation to run, come here. Truly humbling. In full: No-one told me about the continuous hills, but I got through it anyhow! The one at mile 11 is just plain nasty. This was my first half marathon, and I am definitely going to do it next year. The atmosphere can't really be summed up without sounding like a cliche, so if you've not done it before, be there for 2005 and find out for yourself! Date of review: September 30, 2004
