In short: Some organisational issues. Tough, more hilly than flat/undulating In full: Nightmare traffic for those trying to get to 5k due to road closures for the 1 mile race. This needs to be looked at. No signage directing you to parking which makes it difficult to find a place to park if you don't know the area. As a result only just made it in time. Course is pretty challenging. Good mix of runners of different abilities and good support from marshalls & spectators. Hillier than expected and traffic issues means I probably wouldn't do this race again. Date of review: June 24, 2009
In short: Overall organisation needs to be improved In full: My first time for this HM and was hoping for a PB on what should be a fast course. But the heat put an end to that!
Having read the pre-race instructions I knew there was a fair walk from the car park to the start and I fully expected queues if chips were to be collected on the day. With this in mind I made the effort to arrive at around 8am, which I did and had no problems with parking, chip collection or toilets. So if the system is the same next year, then make the effort to get there early, it makes a big difference.
That said, I fully agree that chips should be sent out in the post, it would have made things so much easier today. More loos are definately needed along with more marshalls and better organisation of and more water at water stations. It also needs a proper PA system at the start, better signage and more helpers at the end to make sure everyone gets their goody bag. I think most of the problems today come down to a lack of people to cover the basic tasks such as marshalling, manning water stations, handing out goody bags. With more people helping out (and kinder weather!) this has the potential to be a really good PB race.
In short: Flat course, PB potential but a bit pricey In full: Well organised and marshalled but needs more loos and the first 5k is delinately shorter than the second half which had me thinking I was well inside my target time at halfway when I actually wasn't! Still, it's a fast flat course with definite PB potential, altough I don't think it's very good value for money, only medal, water and banana at the end. Date of review: March 9, 2008
In short: Marathon was billed as mostly flat when actually it is quite hilly/undulating in places In full: Was a much tougher course than they made it out to be. Hills and quite twistly in places. The cobbles were painful and an uphill last mile is just plain cruel. Please can someone make sure Abingdon marathon is brought back to life next year - a real flat PB course. On the plus side, marshalls were good and very encouraging and good support from spectators out on the route. Date of review: October 14, 2007
In short: Organisation somewhat lacking once again In full: No clock running at the finish. Massive queues for medals and t-shirt. Far too long to get Prizes to the winners. Silly prize system just added to the confusion, why don't they just do 1st, 2nd, third male & female and then vets prizes after the first three like everyone else! And considering the number of entrants, perhaps chip timing would be a better idea to speed this process up. On a more positive note, marshalling was good and there was quite a bit of spectator support along the way. Better value for money this year as you also got a T-shirt as well as a medal. In short: Could have been better. In full: Chaotic at the start, not enough toilets, very rushed prizegiving with prizes given out incorrectly. More water stations would have helped considering the heat. Was well marshalled with good support along the way. Overall though, I expect better organisation from a race of this size, especially when it has been held for so many years. Date of review: June 18, 2006
