In short: Lovely route, challenging uphill finish and well marshalled In full: Walking to the start I was promised a short course - which is fine, it's billed as 'approximately 10k' - but it wasn't, if anything my garmin had it a smidge long. And that was just one challenge, what with the headwind (on the way out, and when coming back, it seemed), a few patches of mud and some undulations, including one right at the end. But none of that is a bad thing, this is a lovely race. A great mix of trail and road, well marshalled and a good, honest, challenging course. The entry fee is extremely reasonable, especially given that finishers receive a tote bag, shot glass, medal, water and fruit. Well done everyone concerned, and nice to see a sunny day to reward the marshals for their efforts in cycling round the course and pointing us all the right way. Date of review: April 14, 2013

In short: As hard as they come In full: Not a race to run for speed, with more ups and downs than a season of Eastenders, but a fabulous atmosphere, brilliant route and a serious test. I haven't run one of these for a couple of years but will not leave it so long next time, just brilliant. I have a theory that the field is mostly triathletes, which makes for a great atmosphere along the (entirely positive) lines of "we're just running, why are we doing this?" Whatever the reason, though, it's a great race. Date of review: March 4, 2013

In short: Undulating is definitely the word In full: The 3-lap nature means that you're going to get very friendly with every up and down on this playful course. I suppose there were some flat bits but I barely saw them. There again, it was raining throughout and I may just have been concentrating on not giving up the ghost. Even a slide on the waterlogged section after the finish couldn't dampen the mood for me. Wonderful organisation and lovely welcoming marshals and fellow runners-exactly what a Southerner visiting the North expects. Date of review: December 22, 2012

In short: Brilliant-great marshals, superb atmosphere, sucking mud and bogs to fall over in In full: Just a superb race. Saw the first shoe lost in the mud at the first field, fell over in the deeper water, and giggled through the pigs' trough. Marhsals were excellent, stopping any traffic but finding time to cheer us on, the bloke with the tannoy at halfway made me laugh and the girl on the baggage drop has a promising future as an events organiser. Even my fellow runners were friendlier than sometimes, though maybe you just make them like that in the South west. Date of review: November 13, 2011

In short: Off road, hilly and challenging terrain; well marshalled and signed In full: Loved this race, a proper little gem, and oh so reasonably priced. The hills did for me, really, but running around and through fields (luckily dry, or I'd have had even more trouble!) was a real pleasure, and glorious in the September sun. In short: Lovely club race, suitable for any level of runner with a lovely atmosphere In full: Thoroughly enjoyed this run. It's a good, challenging 5 miler, with a quick start and thereafter some hills which don't quite let you go until the finish. Nicely marshalled, slick organisation and a really good, family atmosphere. Having the junior race just beforehand really sets the tone nicely. For me it was a little break from a festival, so being able to have a shower afterwards was a large part of the treat! Date of review: July 19, 2011

In short: Second time here, and I hope to return again and again In full: I ran this last year and enjoyed it again this year, despite it being a bit of a journey for me and my time being nearly 6 minutes slower. No hiding a lack of running, particularly on this course that isn't exactly hilly but certainly isn't exactly flat either - never quite lets you go. Really good race, this, nicely organised and well marshalled. I hope the numbers increase even more, though if they do that one pinch point at the start would be more of a problem. But I enjoyed the whole thing (again). Date of review: July 5, 2011

In short: Never gets easier, always rewarding In full: I was going to miss this, seeing as the last couple of years have been so cold, but joined in when it was clear that the temperature would at least stay positive. Glad I did - the atmosphere on the run was good, bits of encouragement from those working hard around me. It's a tough run, but no ice at least this year, and the variety of terrain keeps it interesting. My slowest time yet, but I'm sure it will spur me on to better things. In short: Hills upon hills In full: This was a tough run, that just never seemed to get easier to me, though that perhaps shows I'm not quite in shape. Looking at the profile my garmin produced for me it's true that the main hills are in the first half, but the second half sees some descents followed by ascents, and certainly the ups were regular enough that I never felt I'd reached "the downhill bit". Lovely quiet roads and smooth organisation, plus if you live nearby you can cycle there on the cuckoo trail which makes for a good start/end to the whole thing. Date of review: September 13, 2010
