In short: No goodie bags for the slowest In full: This was the most poorly organised race I could imagine. The timetable went to pot from the start, the PA system was inaudible. Since it was bitterly cold, I took refuge in the day centre with many others. We were told we would get an announcement when to go to the start line. The announcement was late, so a number of us had to run to the start, and I had no time to get to the back of the crowd - apologies to all who had to get past me at the start. I am a slow runner and was really upset to get to the finish and be told the goodie bags had run out. Yes, a T-shirt will supposedly be sent out (not holding my breath on that), but that is not the same. This was my first race in Wales since moving here. I am very disappointed with my experience. On the positive side, the mutual encouragement between us slow ones was fantastic, and the fireworks were superb. Date of review: January 1, 2009

In short: wonderful marshals In full: I came last, by a large margin. Asthma, pollen and heat are not a good mix, especially when compounded by a lack of training due to other matters. What made the race for me was the kind and generous attitude of all the marshals, who without exception encouraged me and did not make me feel stupid for being so slow. The kindness of the lady who came out specially to support me through the last mile brought me to tears. A club with such a lovely membership deserves all the success in the world. In short: Top class organisation In full: I was so very impressed with the organisation of this race. A problem with the course was dealt with smoothly and efficiently. The marshals were terrific and deserve a huge round of applause. On a day like today, the lack of shade over large parts of the course did add to the difficulty, but that is obviously not something that can be held against the organisers, especially since they did provide an extra water station on account of the heat. The only downside for me was the section along the main road with cars whizzing by non-stop. I did not feel confident about overtaking anyone on that stretch, and some cars did veer in very close to the runnner. Overall though, I think this is a splendid event and I intend to return next year. Date of review: June 12, 2006

In short: Fun event In full: I had a really good time and am not sure what some of the gripes are about. Arrived about 9.15 am with a slight, but not excessive wait at the gate. Did not have any problems with crowded toilets or lack of toilet paper, and was delighted to find that there were alternatives to the portaloos - could it be that for once the men were disadvantaged in this respect? Yes, there was a delay to the start, and I personally would have appreciated a PA system so that we could have been told about this, but it wasn't a dreadfully long delay. My main gripe was the hills, which had me plodding head down so hard that I missed seeing the lion LOL! The deer stampede was excellent though. I could have done without being passed by so many cars going in both directions, but I guess that is the lot of a back-of-the-packer. I was reminded about taking off the chip at the finish. I think the medal is very good, nice and solid. The fact that it is the same each year, with only the ribbon changing is to my mind sensible, because it obviously saves costs on production. The goody bag could have perhaps have done with something instantly edible like a banana or cereal bar, and given the cold weather, it would have been nice to have more places from which to get a hot drink rapidly rather than just the one cafe. In short: Glad this was my first 10k In full: I did enjoy this race very much and was not made to feel bad about being a back of the pack runner. I thought the organisation was good and liked the goody bag. My only complaint is about the Pasta Party on the Saturday night, which was not worth the money at all, with very indifferent food and entertainment. Date of review: October 4, 2005

In short: People's kindness made my day In full: This was my first race apart from a Race for Life I did in June. I was dead scared! I'd like to thank all the marshals for being so kind to number 16. Since I was almost the last in, I ran the race pretty well on my own and on several occasions started to feel upset at how slow I was. The marshals really helped to motivate me again. This meant I did intersperse running with my ever increasing walk breaks at the end, and thus managed to make it home in just under the hour which I had set as my target for today. I was delighted with the water bottle in the goody bag. I've wanted one for ages but hadn't managed to organise myself into a trip to get one. Date of review: August 21, 2005
