In short: Room for improvement In full: I have ran the Lakeland race series twice and have always thought them to be well organised and good fun. However their first attempt at staging a marathon left much to be desired. I only do trail running and this was a fairly tough course catching many people out with rocks, tree roots and other obstacles that required you to hop skip and jump over with very tired legs. Certainly in many places it was quite technical. I witnessed many stubbed toes and trips/falls. A better course description would have been useful to many rather than the slide show. For the entry fee i felt they could have done better than just 4 drinks stns over 25/26miles and if as some have said there was no water at the end then thats unforgivable. The Tshirt was excellent as they always are but the medal was not engraved with the event on it. Definitely felt the race to be overpriced for what it was, however with improvements it can get better. You do get stunning scenery and there is always a good buzz around the finish area of Lakeland Trail races and the people at the drinks stns were friendly. Doubt i will run it again as currently there are many more better trail marathons around. Date of review: July 4, 2011

In full: Ran this last year and find it to be a good event. Very well sign posted which is handy because at the "Sargent Major's" briefing he threatened to take anyone to spec savers if they got lost!! One gripe for me tho is there is far too much road involved, otherwise a good undulating course with a couple of steep climbs in the forest, have to be patient with the stiles, gates ect. Was none to impressed at the third water stn when told to wait a few mins whilst they were getting more water!! also the last water stn is 5miles from the finish which is quite a way to go still, thank heavens for the man with the hose watering his garden with about 2miles to go! Finish area is ok and friendly but i watched numerous runners finish to silence which is a bit disappointing. Its a good race tho and will probably do it again next year. In short: Good long Trail race with superb Marshalling In full: As Trail races go i thought the hills were ok and mostly runnable, certainly not the "hands on knees" as in some other Trail races. The descents however had me holding back at times and strangely to me there seemed to be more Downs than Ups. Lots of pleasant running through woods with a pretty good surface all the way round, if it was not for the numerous stiles, gates and narrow paths you can push on at quite a good pace. I liked the idea of running a lap of the field at the start to spread the field out as the race path soon narrowed. The real plus for me tho was the marshalling, they popped up everywhere and offered genuine encouragement, ive never seen so many and all were really friendly and did an excellent job. The organisation was good as was the goody bag, cakes and feed stations. Big Thanks to all those involved with putting this race on. Date of review: June 21, 2010

In short: Big Hills, Rocky underfoot. Hot, Tough, Loved it! In full: 2nd time at this and 2nd time ended up in the medical tent (thanks to the medic guy for his help)cut to bits having fallen! A lovely race with a good atmosphere helped by good weather, people, marshalls and everyone is always friendly, a very different feel to road racing. The organisation is good tho more loos please! There are tough climbs and it is very rocky for large parts underfoot, glad the grass was shorter to the run in this year! One request, with the new start this year im sure the course was about a mile longer, if anyone measured it on their Garmin could they post the actual distance on here please, ta. Target for next year to stay upright for the whole race and run up the Coffin trail, ha! Date of review: April 28, 2010

In short: A polce escort to the start - fantastic In full: Thanks to Overton Harriers, marshalls and the Police for excellent organisation and a very friendly race. With the exception of two climbs this race felt like it was downhill pretty much all the way making it a very fast trail race, kept thinking their must be another hill around the corner but there was not. Thoroughly enjoyed it, good weather tho the wind up at Combe Gibbet ensures a quick getaway! Look forward to doing this one again - thanks Date of review: April 12, 2010

In short: A good fast trail ace with a good feel about it In full: For a trail race this was quite a fast course. Underfoot was good most places hard packed and well trodden. No mud and only one serious short steep climb. A good introduction to trail racing. A good setting with an excellent club house food/drink/showers ect. This race has a good feel about it and i had a dreadful run! Date of review: September 29, 2009

In short: Completely inadequate signs and marshalling for such distances In full: I can not believe how poorly this course was marked out. More than once we had to stop at intersections with no signs or marshalls. At approx 9m myself and another runner became completely lost in the woods, eventually two became around 15 runners standing around lost. Eventually found our way out and ended up running 18.6 miles instead of 15m, never found one check point at all and at the finish could not see any water. A serious situation could have developed if a lost runner had become injured in the woods, thankfully i dont think this happened. Whilst the scenery is stunning and the people friendly this is a race organised by a non running group, The Rotary club i believe. Would not do this race again. Date of review: July 21, 2009
