In short: Well-organised, fairly quick rural run In full: Well-organised and pleasant rural run through nice countryside and villages. Nice, friendly marshals and good route. Only negative is that the medals are just a job lot, so you get the same one each year and the goodie bag is very poor....water and a booklet in a bag. Great race but not vfm. In short: Great crowds, but awful start as always and expensive In full: The start was horrible as too many people crammed in and people were seemingly coming from all angles. If you weren't there very early then you'd be stuck behind slower runners for a while I imagine. Learning from previous disasters at Bath I got to the pens very early, but still not early enough. Difficult access at the venue I guess and perhaps too many runners for that access? Took a long time to get going and a slow first mile. After that the crowds were great and the run was really nice.
Bag drop and collection was good, apart from the ridiculous very first section, which covered 3 X the numbers of the other number categories and subsequently had a huge queue. My brother who is a top 100 runner was close to missing the start because of this.
Good marshalling, fluids and support and a pretty swift exit after some initial queues. Decent goody bag, but pretty punchy price-wise and a pants t-shirt for the money.
Enjoyed the atmosphere on the course. My local race so I will be back, but I probably wouldn't travel for it if I lived elsewhere. Date of review: March 2, 2014
In short: Tough hills, nice scenery, shoddy start In full: With a few minutes to go there were hundreds of people walking where we were about to run. I didn't hear any announcements and we were crammed into pens near the start freezing. Luckily it going soon, with no further announcement. My wife and son did the fun run and just went when people started running near them, as there were no instructions. They then got stuck behind all of the 10k walkers on the hill. Not sure why the fun run started at the same time!
It was annoying to come back and find my bag covered in mud, a sheet would not have gone amiss to put bags on.
Other than this it was a nice race through nice scenery. Very tough hills, but a good route through the countryside. Barely saw a marshall, but the route was simple and traffic free. Nice medal. Date of review: February 9, 2014
In short: Great race in the countryside In full: I signed up on the day, but did not have to face any long queues at all. Very smooth operation throughout. Pleasant route through the countryside and a nice medal at the end. The sun even shined. It was pretty much as good as it gets! Date of review: November 20, 2012
In short: Brilliant race, dodgy goodie bag In full: My first Cardiff half and after battling through some tough traffic we were treated to a great event. Fast course, well-organised and brilliant crowds. My only criticism would be the lack of food in the goodie bag. I went looking for chocolate only to find some shampoo,non-alcoholic beer and a cough sweet. Probably the last 3 things I needed at that time. Other than that it was excellent! In short: Good big city race In full: My only criticism would be that there was a nasty hole in the road which someone could have easily had an accident in and that there were no sports drinks on the route. A gel is not quite the same. Otherwise a very well organised event, with a great t-shirt, medal and support. Date of review: September 30, 2012
In short: Great value for money and well-organised. In full: I thought that it was a great event today. Awful weather and a long walk from the designated car park were the only negatives and you can't blame anyone for the former. Apart from one bit of rough road it was nice run and was very well marshalled.
Everything was very smooth from my perspective and there were some nice touches. Being given bits of chocolate flapjack enroute was nice, as was having names called out at the finish. However for me the best thing was the excellent value for money. £18 and you got a fantastic medal, comparable with any major race, plus a free t-shirt. I did the Melksham 10 for a few pounds less the week before and you got zero.
I'll be back. Well done to the organisers. Date of review: September 23, 2012
In short: Usually good, but someone messed it up this year. In full: My local and previously favourite race, but I was shocked by how much it went downhill this year. Apart from the shambles of a delayed start and apalling runners vilage conditions; the end was simply disgraceful. One poor lad was trying desperately to separate foil sheets, which held everyone up. Another lad was trying to pass drinks over a space of 3 foot of bin bags. I got no t-shirt, yet saw others with 4 or 5. Good bag, but why wasn't everything in the bag with an army of people handing them out and moving everyone along. I brought a friend from Essex and was embarrassed with the organisation. You expect more from a great city and significant price. What does all that money go on? Does someone make a huge profit? Date of review: March 16, 2008
