In short: Well organised flat course with easy navigation
In full: Whole route is along two canals, so flat as can be. Mainly good trail with perhaps 10 miles tarmac path. Canal has milestones every half mile for last 30 miles - helps a lot. Potentially quite exposed in bad weather. But as easy a race as you are going to get at this distance.

In short: More like an off road ultra
In full: Good organisation. Friendly bunch of runners. But two hills repeated 26 times means much tougher and slower than road race, even if gentler on the body. Laps didn't get boring because of scenery and level of challenge - but not to be underestimated. Would have been really hard had it been muddy: but we had perfect weather

In short: Hard to fault - flat fast course + efficient friendly organisation
In full: Ideal for those who like small friendly races. Don't be put off by the fact this is five laps - in fact this helps since it means you get a steady stream of folk passing you or for you to catch.

In short: Excellent organisation - but hardest thing I've done
In full: 50 mile trail race. Lots of mud - perhaps worse than usual given a whole day of rain. Requires good navigational skills to follow strip map - route is not marked. Great organisation, excellent website, and lots of free food and drink at checkpoints and end. Far more challenging than 50 miles on road - but great to finish.

In short: Criminal - over a mile short. Would be nice 25mile trail race
In full: Inexcusable to call this a marathon and for it to be less than 25 miles. Also no way they could have coped with the 700 race limit (about 150 was ideal). That said, fast and flat course with some good scenery early on, and not overly competitive - but they must get the distance independently verified for next year if they want anyone to come back. Tow path was good running surface and plenty of overtaking room.

In short: Great course; well organised - shame about weather!
In full: Great course round castle grounds largely off road - and hills offset by long fast downhill sections. Friendly and well organised and marshalled - good buffet afterwards. Good range of runners amongst 150 who braved driving rain and strong winds. But had to change in loos.
