In short: Excellent race In full: I've now clocked a PB and PW on this course, so really can't blame the route ever again! Well organised and very friendly; good marshals, slick water stations and plenty of pockets of uplifting support. It's a good route, though a bit slippery where the leaves have stuck to the wet road surface! Date of review: October 28, 2013
In short: Well organised carnival marathon In full: Flatter than before but not "flat". Race village was okay, massage service before the race was good. Baggage service very good. First half route was fair, second half quite pleasant getting out of the city and round the parks and lake. Mile markers mostly 0.1 mile (170 yards) off, 21 mile marker was over 1/3 mile wrong. Marshalls very good, water stations good but I wasn't keen on the squeezy water bottles! General crowd support very good, sparse in places, but this wasn't London and there weren't half a million people available to turn up on the day. Around the city centre and finish area the crowds were immensely loud and supportive. Finish zone was good, goody bag pretty good too. Medal massive and attractive. The price was close to a rip off, £6 more than most big city marathons, and that's before being expected to pay £15 for a t-shirt. Date of review: October 10, 2013
In short: Hard cross country, free pint and lovely baps! In full: It's a well organised friendly race with a challenging course. Growing in size and popularity, it'll be a regular feature for those wanting a good hard run! Good paths, some roads, plenty of hills, and a free pint at the bar at the finish. Good bacon baps at the finish too! Date of review: September 22, 2013
In short: Good race, poor water stations In full: Generally good organisation. There was a problem issuing numbers to those who turned up a bit close to the race start (I was there an just over an hour early and found no queue). Baggage drop was excellent, marshals friendly, as expected! Big problem: water stations. We knew it would be very hot, and water stations were wholly inept and inadequate to the task. The marshals at the stations tried very hard but too many people trying to get drinks just made for utter chaos and resulted in runners missing water completely or losing time waiting in queues for a cup! In short: Well organised, good route, great race In full: Sorry for being used to country lanes and beautiful countryside, as I'm almost not impressed with the scenery. Good start, well-marshalled course, good atmosphere, 2 good water stations (very useful as it was fairly warm!) and a good finish. No t-shirt this year, but that's fine. Nice medal and a nice PB! In short: Well organised but shockingly expensive In full: The bridge-affar was well handled, so well done to the organisers who had to make a difficult decision with very little time. The situation was explained clearly and as soon as they could.
However, that does not have anything to do with charging up-to £28 for a 10k. That was virtually daylight robbery, whether for charity or not. The t-shirt and medal in the goody bag didn't cost much and the 80p worth of chocolate was poor. Date of review: May 19, 2013
In short: Good race, it'll get better with age! In full: Generally a good race, and it has the potential to be great! marshals were mostly helpful and supportive, though hired security guys knew nothing. Water stations were all very good, well laid out and spread out. As a visitor to the city I would have liked signs saying where to park (having entered late there were no "VIP" parking slots left; it took me 1/2 hour to find my way around! I was also caught out slightly by dozens of unmentioned underpass "hills" - nothing much, but combined they really affected my stride! T-shirt "for sale" (£15) is excellent, the free finisher's t-shirt was a surprise, and pretty good for a cotton one. Way too large though, does one size really fit all?! The preparation for the start and finish in the football stadium was good, I'm sure football fans felt it meant more! Great support in the last 400 yards! Date of review: May 6, 2013
