In short: Got a PB despite that hill! In full: A good race, well organised(especially liked the chip timing). It was reflected however in the slightly higher entry fee. Wimbledon drivers don't like runners very much so you have to be carefull when crossing roads, but the marshalls were superb. They didn't take any nonsense from the cars and they were extremely friendly. The free milkshakes, sports gels and red bull cans were appreciated at the end as was good quality medal (which was engraved!). Reccomend this one, don't be put off by the price tag. In short: A very fast course which just needs a few tweaks on the organisation front. In full: Although not quite as good as last year on the organisation front it is still a great race and super fast despite the occasional hill. Compared to the other recent two essex 10k races on organisation alone:
Not as good as Billericay (but then we really do get spoiled there!!)
No where near as bad as the car wreck that Southend was this year.
In conclusion, well worth doing but you need to get there early, park on the surrounding roads (not in the car park) follow the crowd to the start, carry your own water, smile for the camera just after mile 4, know how many miles are in a 10k race (6.25), and look good at the finish.
......Oh and incidently, don't turn up to the start 5 minutes late having just run 1.5 miles to get there and then on having finally made it to the first actual mile marker (knackered already) realise that you forgot to change into your running shoes..........
..........yes i felt like a complete and total....... Date of review: November 20, 2006
In short: Great course, great weather and very enthusiastic marshalls! In full: This was my first 10 Mile race and I was very impressed. There were very few hills, certainly nothing to worry about and 3 well spaced water stations. All the marshalls were smiling and cheering you on and there was a very friendly atmosphere amongst the runners (helped by a relativly small field I think). This was all topped off with a nice long sleeved top for finishers and a stall selling some really nice cake! Well organised start and finish as well. Date of review: November 12, 2006
In short: Excellent Race. Several hills to test your stamina and a fantastic medal and goody bag! In full: Perfect weather this year, not that windy at all. At least 3 hills that are challenging but not that hard by any means. The finish is one of the best as far as organisation and planning go. Reccommended!! Date of review: November 5, 2006
In short: Fantastic this race is an absaloute bargain for great organisation and a fast course. In full: October 2006 Race.No frills, just a well organised race at a very good price. This is a very fast course helped enormously by having an A race (for those under 21 mins) and a B race (for those over 21 mins)which started 2 minutes later. This meant that those in the B race like myself had the rare opportunity to start on the actual start line without lining up behind the elites! An excellent idea. I will definetly be running this one again! Date of review: October 28, 2006
In short: What went wrong? In full: After reading all the reviews written before mine I have to say that i do agree with the majority of comments about this years race. The actual race itself was flawless in my eyes. Despite the large number of runners taking part, once on the road faster people could overtake fairly easily. There was a lot of crowd support and the course was well marshalled with the police and ambulance services helping out where required. There was no problems with the water station that I saw and the distance markers were excellent. I don't however understand why the organisers changed the start and finish routines from what worked so well last year? Last year everyone lined up around the bend to start with, then we were all called around the corner to the start a few moments before the gun went off. The only problem then was that it took 2 minutes to reach the actual line once the gun went off, but with so many runners it was only to be expected (this year I couldn't see the start and I didn't hear a gun!!!). I agree with everyone on the finish though, it was a mess. Last year there was a clear finish and a very short funnel which meant you had to run through it and then you dispersed into the crowd on the other side. There was no queue to cross the line! I hope that whoever made the descision to change the format for the start and finish decides to change it back for next year. (Lets not all forget though that 2000 plus runners can't be the easiest crowd to organise and it could have been a lot worse! Plus despite the very long queue to get one, the t-shirt was great.) I will be back next year in hope........... Date of review: October 9, 2006
In short: A tough race with a hill that would be tough to tackle once but you do it twice! Well Organised and well marshalled. In full: I found this race to be a tough one mainly due to heat and the energy sapping hill at the start. The marshalling was very good and there were no problems that I saw with traffic and runners mingling together. Water stations and a local with a hose helped to combat the heat. Also the fayre going on during and after the race made the day good for all the family not just the runners. Date of review: June 25, 2006
In short: This race is hard! The organisation however is top notch with a really good atmosophere amongst the runners. In full: An excellent display of organisation. More Marshalls than you could count (all smiling and cheering you on), signage all the way, easy to see km markers, 3 water stations!, a well organised start and finish topped off with a good looking t-shirt. The actual course on the other hand was a beast. Several long up hill drags with very muddy terrain (definetly wear trail shoes). Luckily the weather held off or I think the mud would have been even worse. The route is interspersed with sections of road (the 1st and last kilometres are road). The field was quite small maybe 250 - 300 runners. Several of these were children who put in some excellent performances and out performed many of the adults (the majority of whom I saw very graciously encouraged the little ones along as they sprinted past!). Altogether an excellent day even more so when considering that this is the first year of running the event. I fully reccomend this one! Date of review: May 21, 2006
In short: Mildly tough off road race with good scenery. In full: My first attempt at off road racing and I really enjoyed it. The course was muddy in places with quite a few ups and downs but nothing too challenging. Quite a large field made for a slow start as the trail is quite narrow so passing people was difficult. The marshall presence was good and they did a fine job at the various "runner junctions" of keeping us all heading the right way. My only major gripe was the lack of distance markers as it did make pacing virtually impossible. However once I had decided that timings were out the window I just looked around and enjoyed the view!
