In short: Something every runner should experience at least once In full: If youre bored with road running and looking for something to perk up your running, try this race. It is so different to any experience a road run could give you. Go for a time if you must, but there is such comaradie amongst the runners, trip/fall/sink and loads will help and laugh with you. The scenery is beautiful (if you have the guts to take your eyes off the path) you have to think all the way around, no need for iPods to keep you motivated. You get dirty, you fall, you laugh, you chat, you just enjoy. Do it at least once, but be careful, like me you may want more!

In short: Great flat race. In full: Was a bit windy and cold this year. No real hassles except that the start was a bit "flat" - no real hype, didnt even know we had started until the hordes started to move forward. Great race t-shirt and good bargins on sale afterwards. Shower facilites also good. Werent that many spectators this year either, but maybe that because it was so cold. Date of review: February 4, 2008

In short: Good PB potential. Clear course. Water was scarce. In full: First 10K. All went smoothly beforehand. Could have had more loos available, ques very long. Route very clearly marked, friendly marshalls. No water available at 5K when I went past, lots of cups on the ground, but none for me. Thankfully a friendly villager had put some out about half mile later. Then at end water also very scarce when I finished.... Weather was great, dry and fairly warm, which however made me quite thirsty, so lack of water was a problem. Thanks for the medal. Tshirt quality dissappointing for the price. Good race though as great for a PB. Date of review: March 11, 2007

In short: Fast and furious In full: Enjoyed the morning, bit chaotic at the start, all bunched up and not really able to see the starter etc. I didnt notice any of the mile markers, thankfully was wearing a garmin, so knew where I was. Runners were friendly. Parking a bit of a nightmare, as we were directed to an area to park in and then chased away. Date of review: February 6, 2007

In short: Great for formites In full: Was great to meet formites that Ive been speaking to over the last few months and to see RichK's friendly face every couple of miles. But think a goody bag at the end, music at the start, better food and franchising all make the race day a better experience, especially if you dont do very many. Without RW and its members this race would have been very average for me as far as atmosphere goes. End was dissappointing again no music playing, just stats about winners times, not great to hear as you plod through the last few yards. Great marshalls and course very clear. In short: Fortunately didnt loose sense of humour in the mud In full: Since reading "The Looniness of the Long Distance Runner", Ive wanted to do Race the Train and it didnt dissappoint. The course has been described as tough and if you are only used to canal paths, small bridges and tarmac, it is more than really tough, but a fantastic experience. The train toots and the spectators scream, all adding to the romance of the race. I wore old trainers with lace locks and often had to stop to haul them out of the mud, they also seemed to have no benefit on the slopes as my feet slipped out of them due to steep hills "camber". The single foot path dissappeared in places and at times you couldnt tell the difference between a cow pat and puddle, but again the train would toot and youd be motivated to move your chassis even though you have no hope of beating even the second train. A great weekend and a truely great escape from the monotany of yet another LSR on tarmac. Date of review: August 21, 2006
