In short: Fast and flat course with great views over to Liverpool and Wales. In full: Another excellent race from BTR Liverpool. The course was fast and flat with Birkenhead Park proving to be yet again a beautiful and practical starting point.
Nice tree-lined run-in on perfect road surface for first mile, through the dock estate then perfect weather and scenic 3 miles along the Mersey - the esplanade route at Egremont being great under foot with cycle markings to help keep your line and focus.
Past the 10k finish the half marathon course continues along the north Wirral coastal park, with nice sea views and a concrete promenade which is very similar to the Rhyl marathon. Some sand and gravel terrain and a few inclines will take off some pace.
The return along Leasowe Road was well cordoned to traffic and good that they negotiated a lane closure for the runners. There's a left hand swing onto a very old bridleway/public footpath that was slightly muddy and slow under foot.
The final 3 miles were back onto the concrete paths of the esplanade and a last push as a dog-leg to the finish line. Excellent medal and technical tee shirt. Winner was 1h 8'so potential for an excellent time. Highly recommended. Date of review: October 13, 2014
In short: Great one for newbies, but for PB would need course tweaks In full: Overall a job really well done by RnR other than the marshalling gap at mile 10 and some safety howlers with course bollards in Mathew St/city centre.
The low field was I think partly due to local runners branding this more Fun Run than PB Run - plus perhaps loyalty to BTR who had organised excellent marathons in 2011 & 2012.
Sections of the north Liverpool loop were a real high, with Stanley Park looking great. Otterspool too had no headwind, which is usually a killer.
To encourage elite runners RnR need to make the course faster, eg include more of Liverpool's excellent major tree-lined roads in and out of the city.
More marketing to runners, less reliance on local tabloids, and gotta improve the website...
