In short: quick but flawed In full: Nice quick two lap course but hard to get too without a car, not enough parking and a lack of km markers which made it hard to work out distance. Marshalls were sporadic and fairly quiet also giving no idea of distance. Fairly cheap though and if you live locally probably worth it for the PB potential. Date of review: March 8, 2010
In short: Not quite so fun second time round In full: The organisation of this race was fairly well done with a good number of pre race toilets and plenty of announcements so you knew what was going on. They didn't organise the runners by speed at the start but the wide small lap at the start meant people seemed to get into their positions without too much slowing/overtaking required. I was very impressed with the number of water/sponge stations and the surprise Lucozade station at 19 miles was almost worth the entrance fee alone for someone who had been walking for about a mile up to that point. The fivs-ish miles of greenway on the second lap was torturous for a slower runner as there were frequent points where I could not even see the next runner and the mile markers seemed to take forever to appear. Hills were very comfortable throughout although a couple of steep downhills managed to kill my calves afterwards. The finish was good despite no goody bag although one minor gripe is why can't they have separate medals for the marathon and the half. I probably would do the half again if I lived locally but as I only did this after missing out on London it is not worth the 3 hour journey there and back. All in all a good first time marathon with no frills but a good, atmosphere and professionally run. Date of review: May 1, 2007
In short: flat, fast training run In full: as i live 5 minutes from the start i can't comment on the general organisation as i turned up at 7:58 and went straight to the start.
I would not really describe this as a race as such as so many people are using it to marathon train and also its strange distance. As an 8-miler it was a good course and i will probably copy the route in future training runs. The amount of drink stations was good even if the marshalling on the whole was a bit thin on the ground outside of the start/finsh and the drink stations. The only major gripe, despite it not affecting me, is why do the 16 milers not start first which would give them a clear route and only the very quickest would have to overtake 8 milers who would have thinned out by that time.
Overall, a good run that I would only do again, and 16 miles, if I got a FLM place. Date of review: April 3, 2007
In short: Great two-lap course of a beautiful park In full: As it is not a proper race there were no route markers and only one water station at half way but this undulating course with two nasty, little hills made for great marathon preperation and the pacers were invaluable especially on the first lap. Only minor gripe was that there was no water left for the slower runners at the end. Date of review: March 5, 2007
In short: Cheap & cheerful, flat course In full: A very enthusiastically organised race which whilst it lacked the facilities you expect from larger races was still well done. Congestion was almost avoided at the start with very wide paths to run on and the lack of anything even remotely resembling a slope meant PBs were definitely on the cards. In short: a couple of gripes but a great race despite them In full: a lack of toilets at the start was annoying as was a very undefined start line which saw me have to reset my watch after 1:30. Despite these problems though this is a great race. Nice countryside scenery and small pockets of support help you around the mostly flat course with enough hills to make it an interesting challenge. Having the water at 7 & 9 miles was a bit of a gripe as they could have put the 9 mile one a bit later in the race but overall an enjoyable race which i would do again. In short: bit hillier than i thought it would be and the start was a bit far from the bag storage but apart from that great marshals, good course and a good t-shirt at the end. Oh, and I got a PB which can't be bad Date of review: February 13, 2006
