In short: Poor organisation let down a potentially decent race In full: There were many failings in this race that were down to poor organisation: 0. Website information was not up to date: the site crashed on the night before the race 1. Insufficient toilets. Many of us had to head to the train station and queue up there instead 2. The "Waves" didn't really happen. More of a "Start when you want" which led to large number of inexperienced/slow runners up front blocking the way 3. "Chip" timing failed entirely so no placing 4. Signs at places were not always obvious 5. KM markings were often 100s of metres off 6. Goody Bag was a plastic bag with two leaflets.
With a £30 entry and £5 parking, I'm not sure what I actually paid for in the end.
This could be a decent race for a much smaller group (max 500) if it was organised properly.
In short: Well organised race despite the rain In full: This continues to be a MUST DO race. Great course and scenery. Good support from the marshalls that endured the weather longer than us runners had to. Nice new touches lately with a text msg of our finishing time.
Only requests: (a) Please can we have the cotton long sleeve t-shirts back? I think many ppl have technical t-shirts already that seem to last forever (b) if the forecast is similar in future years, some matting on the grass would help. 1000 ppl tramping up and down the demarked muddy areas left everyone as losers(ruined ground, dirty gym and shoes). In short: Yet another well organised race In full: I've now done this 5 out of the last 6 years and really appreciate the work that goes into the event and the improvements based on feedback from previous years. e.g. we had a couple additional road closures over the last third of the course which was helpful. Local support was fantastic and the overall atmosphere was great.
Highest marshall to runner ratio I've seen. Highly recommmended.
Only minor improvements required: there were still a couple places where we had to dodge unnecessarily aggressive drivers. The km and mile markers are sometimes way off the real markers (I think the measured ones are painted on the road). Date of review: July 16, 2012
In short: A great race to take part in In full: This race had many really good points - general layout was good, marshalling fantastic. Perhaps a couple blind spots as they withered in the weather. Spectator support was huge - at every vantage point throughout the race.
For a first time, there would be a few things that could be improved but the organisers have been told in no uncertain terms about them and should be easy to sort out for next time. Baggage trucks were a nightmare for many of us after the race. Finish line was not demarked. The finish times were not adjusted for the extra quarter mile we ran due to flooding. Better "Goody" bag please next time else drop the "Goody" bit.
In short: Well organised race as always In full: This is worth turning out for - great organisation: parking, sign-posting, marshalling down to the goody bag. Local support all along the route. Tough course in the beginning and the end but that is part of the challenge. Great job again by Handy Cross Runners. Date of review: July 19, 2011
In short: Very well organised race In full: This race had huge support from the organisers and local community all along the course. The route isn't great for a p.b. with too many twists and turns and narrow places. Date of review: May 9, 2011
In short: Very well organised race yet again In full: Despite being a tough course the scenary and variation makes this a great course. Marshalling is excellent. This time they took over the whole town centre to guide people to the car parks.
In short: A fast flat route for a good PB on a dry day In full: My first attempt at this. Good bits - very good marshalling, a good choice of route, very scenic and some choccies at the end. I did like the early start too.
Not so good bits - where was the starting line? I was right at the back having arrived just in time so I couldn't see where the start line was. The surface of the last two miles was mostly track. Not helped by the fact that there was a 'Race (Walk?) for Life' event on at the same time that we had to dodge past.
In short: Fantastic course and well organised In full: One of the few that I wouldn't want to miss. Despite the heavy rain and a spot of flooding, this is a truly great course. Challenging and constantly changing scenery. Very good marshalling and local support popped up just when you need it.
Improvements for next year? A goodie bag to complement the good T-shirt OR a medal even better.
