In short: So glad this distance is run but disappointing entry fee In full: Am so glad this pretty scenic and well-organised race is run. What would we do without a 20-miler to prep for spring marathons? I have to agree with some of the other comments re the price though. What do you get for nearly £30? No closed roads, a tech t-shirt that has most of its space taken up with the name of a local solicitor, water out of plastic cups, NO LOOS on the route and two jelly beans left for the 3 hour plus brigade like me. Shouldn't there be a law that there has to be a loo en route? And some sustenance? Sure there was a white roll sandwich and a Mars bar at the end but what about relative newcomers to this distance or those who've misjudged their time or injured? There must be some thought about offering an energy bar or drink during the race. Most marshals were encouraging but the one who scoffed when I asked about whether there was a portaloo - you have obviously never run that length - the tum can do things you don't expect!! And it's 100 times easier for blokes than females to use the fields/bushes. Date of review: March 28, 2013

2012 BHF Winter Warmer 5 / 10k

In short: Inexcusable early start to 10k In full: The 10k was advertised (in the info pack and on here)to start at 11am. It started at 10.53am. If this irresponsible decision means nothing to the organisers, they should maybe think of pulling out of runs. I have taken part in about 60 races in 10 years, here and abroad, from tiny local runs to city marathons and I have never seen a race start early, not even 10 seconds early. It doesn't take experience of races to work out what's so wrong about that. It takes thoughtfulness for others and a modicum of common sense. Did they consider fans not arriving at their place on time? Or runners (some of whom am quite sure are ex-heart patients) getting stressed and running too fast to catch up? Or runners arriving too late and not bothering? There are many reasons why people don't partake in the mass warm-up and one is they fear an injury doing moves they aren't used to; another is they get nervous before races and prefer to run up just before the start. I'd read the comments about poor organisation in previous years but decided to do it anyway. Never again. I'm told last year they sent people the wrong way with improper signage. The two worst mistakes in consecutive years. Almost criminal. Date of review: October 14, 2012

In short: Excellent...overall In full: Warm and friendly welcome, great views and scenery, challenging - everything you could want in a trail race but...not just mud but bogs (at times ankle-deep)that, unless you have experience, mean stepping through rather than running. And the race stops about 2 mins after the 11-mile mark. Be warned if you are not from Tain and don't know the course. Why publicise it as 12 miles??? Runners generally like knowing how long the race is gonna be! Date of review: October 24, 2011

In short: PB!!! In full: Great to have a race this time of year and well done for clearing as much of the snow as possible. Got a PB and this mainly due to the flat course - recommended! Date of review: November 29, 2010

In short: Heaven and Hell's Baby Brother In full: Like a mini version - though not quite as high -of Perth's Heaven and Hell half (toughest race I've done and that includes the Mighty Deerstalker. Very undulating but scenic, friendly, pretty well supported, great marshals and great organisation. Only gripe is the price, which would put me off doing it again. £19 - why? for a medal and sponsor provided water and biccies? Even the home-brewed coffees and teas behind the registration room afterwards were £1.50. Compare with Balfron, for example. Date of review: May 31, 2010

In short: Pleasant race - worth doing In full: The loops may not be for everyone but a fair bit is in the park and round the pond/lake. Stewards great, lots of local encouragement (thanks all!) and lots of space to run! (women's 10k take note) Only suggestion is to make it clear next year that parking near the entrance to the park (start/finish area and place to pick up chip) is much more convenient for those already registered than the Time Capsule, which is suitable only for on the day entrants: a 10 minute jog back to your car isn't always great after 13 miles! In short: Challenging but great organisation In full: Very professional organisation (and big thanks to the volunteers) and excellent goody bag - one of the best out there. Would be welcoming to beginners but boy, they'd find the hills tough, especially the long one at the start! Ps do I get an extra medal for not stopping to walk up the hills?!! In short: One of the best and enthusiastically organised In full: So many plusses - there's something so smooth about the organisation, it could almost be American. Loved the brass band doing a great rendition of the London Marathon tv tune as we passed and the pipers on the bridge - hats off to them all. Only minus is no portaloos on the route, which meant, ahem, some improvisation by male runners and discomfort among females. Fantastic overall: quality. Date of review: June 24, 2009

In short: For crazy try-anythingers only In full: Brilliant, memorable - other 2 reviews from this year summed up pretty well. Loved the "clod water" description from 2008 reviewer (below)!! Maybe a typo but sums up some of the wading stretches perfectly! Yes, it can be easy to get lost, esp on the scree hill where there are no marshals but stick with a group and it's not too scary. Don't want to think about what'd happen if a nasty fall (vv easy to happen) took place but enough runners to get help probably. Loved the fancy dress and most of the guys suited the deerstalkers and tweed too well!!! Try the 5k unless you're pretty fit and have run at least a 10k easily or other adventure races. NOT for the faint-hearted Date of review: March 22, 2009

In short: Best marshals ever! In full: What a friendly, brilliantly organised race. PB potential too and the scenery's fine, especially the start at Loch Lomond. Must say a huge thanks to the amzingly spirited marshals for coming out on what was forecast to be horrendous weather and was still pretty chilly standing still, I imagine!
