In short: Nice scenery and great grandstand finish In full: I agree with a lot of the comments on the thread so far. I thought the course was great, varied, scenic and reasonably challenging without being to tricky. The gravel track was a bit of a pain and hard on the legs at 18 odd miles but it wasnt very long and the run round Gosforth House after that was loveley. The finish area was a bit crowded but the grandstand was great and a real buzz coming down the last few hundred meters. I would change the location just try and spread it out a bit more. The start was very crowded and could do with improving for next year. It bottlenecked into the start pens but once you were in the pens it was fine. Maybe not letting non-runners into the area by the luggage lorrys and toilets would be good? The expo was a waste of time, it was unfair to make people travel out of the city just to collect a number, there was certainly nothing else at the expo worth looking at. Either post the number and chip or find somewhere in the city to give out the numbers would be my suggestion. Also the goody bag was poor, the t-shirt was nice but the rest was just leaflets. I think there should have been at least 2 more water stations. Once it got hot then there was a real need for more water. For those people doing 5 hours or so it must have been very hard going. Just a small point but some of the signage was a bit misleading, signs for water stations about a mile before they appeared! Having said all of that I did enjoy it, the marshalls and volunteers round the course were great, where there were crowds they were brilliant, I took 40 minutes out of my PB and had a great weekend. With a bit more fine tuning this would be a really great race.
In short: Great race, In full: Really nice course with a few climbs but enough flat bits to balance it out. The sports drinks and sponges were great and showed that a bit of extra thought had gone into the planning. Many thanks to all involved. Date of review: March 16, 2008
