In short: The best race I have ever done! In full: James Elson and the team at Centurion Running were beyond amazing. Every aspect of this gargantuan task was executed with precision and care. The route was utterly breathtaking, the checkpoints so well manned and stocked with anything you wanted and the reception along the way from the support team was uplifting. I was so proud to become a 100 miler and I can't praise the team highly enough. I will be volunteering for future races to ensure that others get the fantastic support that I received.
Well done and see you at another event soon! Date of review: July 12, 2012

In short: mud, sweat and cheers (2) In full: My second marathon of the weekend was never going to be the 3.45 that I did a couple of years back but despite the horrible weather and wallpaper paste consistency chalky mud, I still loved the race. Exceptionally well stocked checkpoints and amazing views made the race really special. I enjoyed the second half much more than the first and the last 2 miles downhill, well a 7s and a 6.10 for the last 2 of a course like this put a smile on my face.

In short: mud, sweat and cheers In full: The only mistake the great people at Hermes running made was to state in their entry form, trail shoes not needed! The rest of the race was fab. So much mud, much hillier than expected, wet, windy and just perfect for an XC marathon!!! Loved it!!!
The fact that it was 2 laps melted away with the beautiful scenery and tranquil location. Flooding had rendered most paths accessible with a pair of skis so the downhills were especially fun, with most runners caked in mud. Exceptionally well stocked checkpoints and easy parking and a bar at the finish meant this is a must for regular marathoners, but also a great starting point for first timers. 2012 The Tribesports London Ultra

In short: A great way to see London In full: I'm not sure why it was £40? The entry fee was steep but the route was ace! There were lots of ultra prepared people based on the hideously expensive kit that some were wearing. not sure how this was going to help in south London, other than getting mugged. The route was great and the weather too. I'll be going back to LDWA events for my 30 milers as they are max £5 entry.
Rory was there to meet all finishers though and that was a great touch Date of review: February 19, 2012

In short: For £3 this is the bargain of the century and an amazing course In full: Having run the summer tanners in 2010, I knew what I was up for. If you want gels and lucozade and a t-shirt and goodie bag, stop reading and go find a race for £40.
This is an LDWA jewel. Perfect scenery, nearly 3000ft of hills and self navigation for 30 miles.
Perfect. What a way to start 2012 with an ultra!

In short: industrial and woodland loveliness In full: In short, an LDWA-style event. very friendly. Got lost and did 31 miles but that was my fault. should have brought my reading glasses. will be back next year! Date of review: September 18, 2011

2011 Downland Challenge Ultra 30
 | | Overall score | | 60% | | Would you do it again? | | Maybe | | | | Details: | | Scenery | | 100% | | PB potential | | 20% | | Atmosphere | | 60% | | Organisation | | 40% | | Value | | 100% | | Beginner-friendliness | | 80% |
In short: great scenery and good to meet up with friends In full: This is the 3rd year I have run this. Notwithstanding the hard-as-nails hills that are traversed twice, the scenery is beautiful and the route is an easy navigate. This year was a no-frills option that had reduced entry fee, nothing but water at the 3 aid stations and no medal/t-shirt.
I think this was intended to attract more runners but I don't think it worked. Even some orange squash at the CPs would have been fine, but I don't think that this budget ultra worked as well as an LDWA event, which are cheaper anyway. Will come back and run this but organisationally, HHH might think about the numbers they are getting compared to some other events. Date of review: July 25, 2011

In short: 50k isa good addition to this race In full: Havng run the marathon last year I knew what to expect. The 50k version took in much of the marathon for the first half but a new route for the second. Flat ultras bring their own challenges and for seasoned hill runners, the relentless lack of change of pace had some of us a little fazed. Relentless forward progress was the name of the game today and in between the showers the sun came out and with the regular checkpoints festooned with bread pudding, I didn't eat much else for the journey. Great to catch up with old friends and to make new ones too. The baseball cap at the end was not the greatest idea, perhaps a t-shirt or a medalwould have been somthing more thoughtful. Having said that, a good race at a time when the calendar is not that congested. Well done marshalls. Date of review: July 17, 2011
