In short: Can't believe I hadn't done this before ! In full: Should have done this years ago. Basically, a 6.5 mile X-C race, with road sections to start and finish.
Exceptional value - long sleeve top, medal, Xmas pudding, free mince pie and hot drink afterwards.
Great atmosphere - lots of runners in fancy dress (plenty of Xmas themes and one extrovert in a mankini!)and a scenic, mildly challenging course with lots of mud.
Must do again. Date of review: December 9, 2012

In short: Tough, but a great work -out In full: One of the hardest halfs in Kent. There are a lot of hills and only the last couple of miles provide any sustained relief. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing - the course is a real challenge and very rewarding if you run well.
Excellent marshalling and water stations. The support was much appreciated and Deal Tri put a lot of effort into making it an enjoyable occasion.
Nice race venue with hot food and drink on offer and personally, I didn't mind it being a mile or so away from the start ( ideal for a warm up/warm down) although I might not have appreciated it on a cold, wet day.
I hope the runner who collapsed in sight of the finishing line is OK - always sad to see that happen to a fellow runner. Date of review: May 13, 2012

In short: Friendly, challenging low-key 10K In full: A very friendly, low key race in beautiful rural Kent. Great crowd support was unexpected and much appreciated, especially after a real "killer" hill at 6/7K.
A great course if you like a challenge and the relatively small field meant easy parking, no queues for the toilets and plenty of delicious cakes at the finish!
At the very opposite end of the racing scale from the London Marathon and none the worse for that. Date of review: April 22, 2012

In short: Bracing Winter race along the coast In full: I echo Neil's thanks to the organisers and marshalls for putting on another great race. Thanet Road Runners put on a range of excellent races over varying distances and terrain throughout the year and deserve great credit for their contribution to the Kent road race scene.
Like any mid-Winter race, you have to take whatever the weather throws at you but we were lucky this year.
It's a well-organised, friendly and fast "no frills" race with plenty of parking right next to race HQ and I also liked the memento this year - something different and very useful.
I agree that the one thing the organisers need to look at is maybe providing some portaloos either at HQ and/or near the start. Although there are public toilets along the seafront, most of them are closed at this time of year and coupled with the limited facilities in the pavilion, that was a problem.
Other than that, an excellent way to finish off the racing year. Date of review: December 7, 2011

In short: Great effort from Maidstone Harriers In full: This is a real "runner's race" and Maidstone Harriers have put in a great effort again this year.
The course is challenging, with a bit of everything thrown in, but once you get to the end of the Pilgrim's Way the final 2.5 miles provides a fast finish.
Scenery along the Pilgrim's Way is superb. Very enthusiastic support at key points along the course and a big thank you to the marshalls - parts of the course along busy roads are not easy to manage.
"10 out of 10" for the goody bag and excellent tee-shirt. Made the whole race great value for money.
The only thing that needs looking at is the location of the finish. The road leading to it had become very busy and runners were having to weave in and out of traffic during the last mile or so.
All round, it's a great half marathon. Date of review: October 17, 2011

In short: Best "turn up and run" race around In full: Just want to give a big "shout" for this race - which has just celebrated its 250th running.
It's a great event on many levels. Very friendly, great atmosphere and a real speed workout that allows you to monitor your general fitness level on a monthly basis.
Many thanks to Joe Cleverley and Keith for putting this race on all year round come rain or shine. I wish I'd discovered it earlier ! Date of review: October 14, 2011

In short: Excellent new race that deserves to get bigger In full: Even though a combination of the extremely hot temperature and a tough, hilly course meant I recorded an all-time 10K "PW" by a considerable margin, I really enjoyed it.
It would make a great venue for a Kent X-C league race. The scenery was outstanding and the whole event was very well organised with a friendly, relaxed feel.
It needs to publicise itself more. I only knew about it because I live about 3 miles away (nice to leave the car at home and jog to the start - not so nice to have to jog back afterwards !)but I'm sure it could attract a much bigger field when the word gets around.
Think of it as an "Eridge Park" style race but over 10K and you can see the potential. Date of review: October 5, 2011

2011 Tonbridge Half Marathon

In short: Excellent race with a lot of potential In full: Great first effort by the organisers. Particular plaudits for the organisation (good pre-race instructions, lots of road closures, plenty of water stations, plenty of toilets, easily accessible HQ etc) and the quite amazing support throughout the route - from the marshalls and the spectators. It really makes a difference having so many supporters cheering everyone on.
The course was tough, especially in the unexpected heat but it was very well marshalled and traffic was never a problem.
As others have said, it was great to see Dame Kelly Holmes giving the race so much support.
Only suggestions for further improvement - a couple of sponge stations would be good and I agree that there should be some way for runners to access their time-zone from the side.
All in all though, a great first effort and a race that has the potential to grow into one of the biggest halfs in the South East. Date of review: September 25, 2011

In short: Deserves it's stand-out reputation In full: I've heard so much about this race and as a lover of X-country and all things off-road I was really looking forward to it.
It didn't disappoint. The best course I've ever run: lots of mud, "killer" uphills (lots of them), sweeping downhills and truly spectacular scenery, although I was watching my feet most of the time.
Very well-organised and very generous. Nice tee-shirt and free beer at the end (and cakes) was extremely welcome.
I loved it, although I'll be taking this week very easy. Date of review: September 12, 2011

2011 Pilgrims Way Run (7+ miles)

In short: Off-road racing at its best In full: A "must do" race for me. Great value, great organisation and a fantastic, challenging course.
I'm surprised it doesn't attract a larger field (although if it did, it might put pressure on the facilities at the clubhouse and cause crowding on the narrower parts of the course) but if you enjoy cross-country or off-road running, this is an absolute must.
All for under a "tenner". Date of review: August 29, 2011
