In short: Wet, Windy. But WILD!! In full: I enjoyed this, my very first Great Run, and it was fabulous! Great support and atmosphere created by the locals really helped me to carry on, despite the awful weather, for the second year running. Admittedly the “Professional” Car Parking on the common left a lot to be desired. I hope it can all be ironed out for next years race, as I will definitely be doing it again. Other than that a great experience.
Despite all the problems created, for Portsmouth, in staging such a mass participation event. I cannot understand why anybody could suggest that it should be moved to another venue. Where else, on the South Coast can you enjoy a 10-mile run with so many wonderful landmarks (many steeped in history), HMS Warrior, HMS Victory, Dockyard, D-day Museum, Royal Marine’s Barracks come to mind. This is “The” Great South Run after all. There is also the magnificent Spinnaker Tower to delight in too.
This being the third biggest run in the Great Run series, it is fully justified in being held here. It’s just a shame that it does not get the same BBC coverage as the FLM and the GNR.
