In short: Great organisation and support made the pain of last few miles bearable! In full: Didn't get the time I hoped for and was in a fair amount of pain from 18m onwards but the great support and organisation meant I still had a great day. Marshalls and volunteers were FANTASTIC - kept encouraging me all the way and the names on the race numbers was a great idea. Really enjoyed the whole race even though it was painful! The support at the finish was awesome and really made my day. Great organisation throughout and at the finish too - would definitely recommend this race. Am tempted to enter 2012 race already but my legs aren't convinced just yet ;-) Date of review: October 10, 2011
In short: Hard going and with few tweaks could be really good In full: Overall, thought it was a good race. But with some extra marshalls could be a lot better. Felt very sorry for the lead runners who weren't directed at the first turn and ended up doing extra. Nearly missed a turn myself but the lovely runner behind me got me back on track. Am really tired today - those hills were hard and really highlighted gaps in my training! Goody bag and medal were fine and thought it was a good atmosphere all the way around (fellow runners were friendly and chatty and the marshalls were friendly and encouraging). Nice welcome at the finish :-) Date of review: September 5, 2011
In short: Finish spoiled it for me! In full: Finishing out in Musselburgh doesn't seem to work - the spectators are stranded and can't see much and getting back to the city centre is a total nightmare. A long walk and long queue is the last thing you need after running a marathon - even more so when you didn't have a great one, like me. Agree with earlier comments about the strange loops thrown in to make up the distance. I hit problems at Mile 18 so was very slow and by the time I came through the last few miles, a lot of the marshalls were gone. The wind was a nightmare - felt like a wind tunnel (tho the organisers can't do much about that)
As for value for money, considering it's about the same cost as London, didn't feel you get as much for your money. They'd run out of T-shirts for marathon finishers by the time I got there which is beyond annoying.
I won't be doing this one again as couldn't face the long slow trudge back to the bus and then to the city :-( Date of review: May 23, 2011
In short: Hard hills but lots of fun running down them! In full: First time doing this race - loved the downhill sections, not great at the uphill! Good fun and great encouragement from marshalls especially on that last hill (which really really hurt!). Date of review: April 25, 2011
In short: Well organised and mostly fun but not a fan of hills ;-) In full: Found this hard going but that'll teach me to do more hills in my training! Was well organised and the finish had a great atmosphere. Particularly enjoyed the pancake stall at the end :-D Date of review: March 27, 2011
In short: Great fun and fantastic atmosphere In full: Great organisation, great marshalls and great atmosphere. Plenty of mud and plenty of challenges from the sheep dip and pig trough. Thanks to those who helped me get back up on the 3 times I fell into the water during the course :-) Finished absolutely covered in muc and probably not smelling too good either! In short: Generally a good race but could be improved In full: Overall enjoyed it - was a good atmosphere and felt good right up to 11 miles! Ran out of energy much earlier than expected and the overtaking of slower runners for the first few miles didn't help (some were walking by the first mile). If the organisers could somehow manage runners starting at the right place, that would be fab! My only other gripe - PLEASE don't make us run past the finish to do the last long loop - that was just mean ;-) Date of review: October 18, 2010
In short: Good organisation, well marshalled and not too crowded :-) In full: A good race - more undulating than I expected but good fun. Not too crowded which was nice as plenty of space. Good mix of abilities. Lots of marshalls. Nice to have water and recovery drink at end. Will probably be back next year. Date of review: September 18, 2010
In short: Disappointing organisation and not good value for the high entry feee In full: Terrible organisation at the start - the delayed start was irritating and more than an inconvenience given most runners will have carefully planned when to eat breakfast - it also meant hotter conditions. We couldn't work out where we were supposed to go and then got stuck behind much slower runners and walkers. Which was disappointing as was hoping for a better time today. The course is way too crowded especially when the elite runners come round and lap everyone else. This highlighted just how badly the route was planned and marshalled.
The finish wasn't any better - being herded along with no clear signs of where to drop chips and pick up goody bags. Being stuck in a crowd really isn't what I was looking for after the run :-( And for the entry fee, I would expect a better goody bag - I have been to many other races which have given better bags for much lower fees.
The only positive bit was the crowd support so thanks to the spectators for the encouragement. Date of review: March 15, 2009
In short: Harder than I was expecting but fantastic atmosphere In full: Great organisation and marshalling - the atmosphere was great throughout the race which was just as well as it was flipping hard ;-) My first Sodbury Slog and am chuffed to have taken part :-D Date of review: November 9, 2008
