In short: 1 Water Station with plastic cups on a summer run??? In full: Good- Marshalls were excellent. Very friendly and supportive. Lovely start and finish areas with plenty of helpful volunteers.
Bad- One MASSIVE negative was, after being advertised as 'frequent' water stations, there was just 1 at 5k, hence the '1' rating for organisation. For ANY race, let alone one that was at a premium price, and on a summers day, I would have expected at least 3, with sport cap water bottles. You have to come to a virtual standstill with those plastic cups if you actually want to drink any of it, and as a result, I lost valuable time and momentum, and cramping became an issue late on.
In short: Flat course, great pb potential, shambolic start! In full: First of all, huge thanks for the effort from all of the organisers. Appreciate it can't have been much fun watching people run around whilst it was pouring with rain on an exposed playing field. They were brilliant, loads of encouragment and the pre and post race food was perfectly judged.
This is the second consecutive year i've run this race and start line problems again i'm afraid! Having run it last year, I knew what way round we were going to be running, so lined up on the start line directly facing about 300 people who had not been properly instructed. When everyone was told what way around it was, people simply turned around, not instructed back behind the start line, which affected the distance and meant me having to fight through a big crowd of people. Just having somebody stationed at the start line to direct people would have been all that was needed, as opposed to 'go over there and we'll come and organise you afterwards'. I'm not super-quick, but always run for a time so very frustrating from that point of view, no 'faster runners at the front' type announcements. We were also a few minutes late setting off.
Sounds like a big whinge up but it was just the one thing that STILL needs to be worked on, despite the feedback from last year. Very simple to fix. Sort the start and it's a clockwork race. Thanks again guys!
In short: Very good for a first attempt In full: Well done to the organisers on the first Folkestone 10k. Definite PB potential if the weather was cooler, but a hard slog with yesterdays heat and no shade, a good 3-4 minutes off PB (not their fault :-) ). The running shoe trophy was a great touch. Will be back next year. Date of review: May 28, 2012
In short: Well organised local race In full: This was my local, which made it very handy, and despite it undulating a bit, I got under 1:30 for the first time ever, so i'm delighted. Will be back next year Date of review: February 27, 2012
In short: First half marathon... In full: Very enjoyable, recommended to me by a triathlete friend of mine who I did a 5k race with in the summer. Warned that it was a challenging course but found it fairly ok. Well worth the trip to Watford and has definitely whet my appetite for more half marathons and a full marathon next year with any luck.
