In short: Very fast marathon course - good for potential PB In full: This is a great race if you're looking for a PB. The profile is flat, with no hills to speak of. The surface is mainly road although there are some sections along rougher path which have the potential to slow you down. The roads are mainly open to traffic so you take your chances as to whether you want to risk running on road or pavement. The marshals were all very good and knew what they were doing. When you run through Abingdon at the start of the marathon the support is great and there's a lot of cheering. However, when you come back through towards the end you feel like you're picking your way through people out doing their Sunday morning shop, which is a bit weird. The finish around the running track is great. Altogether I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a PB. It lacks the atmosphere of London, or the scenery of a trail marathon, but if it's a 26.2 time-trial you're after then you won't go far wrong.
In short: Brilliant fell running on Dartmoor In full: This was my 2nd ever fell race this summer and the 1st in Devon. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. There were only about 50 runners lining up at the start. However these ranged from the very quick to some older and slower types. Good mix of club runners and individual entries. The course is (obviously) very steep and almost all off path. I wasn't in any danger of being first so I always had someone in front of me to keep an eye on so didn't get lost. The scenery was great as you would imagine from a race on Dartmoor. The ground underfoot varied from firm grass to scrambling over rocks and the occasional knee deep bog. The descent from the highest point was slower than I thought due to the long grass masking the ground underneath. Very fast finish down to the dam. Altogether and really great event that I will be doing again next year. Date of review: August 3, 2015
In short: One of my favourite runs In full: What a great event. The scenery up through the Ashridge Estate is great - gorgeous forest, Ashridge House and superb views over the hills. I'm going to do this one again even when not training for a marathon. Also, as mentioned above, for £5 the organisation is superb and there's free cake at the end. The fact that it's not chip timed is a positive as it changes the atmosphere from a race to a more relaxed event. Well done Gade Valley Harriers. Date of review: March 23, 2015
In short: Great race - would do it again In full: This was a great race that went through the middle of Cambridge. Very flat course with defininite PB potential. The start pens were too cramped and spent the first couple of miles puching through the slower runners, but I guess that was my fault for starting too far back. Overall a really superb race. In short: One of the best halfs around In full: I've done a few half marathons now and can honestly say that this is up there with the best. The organisation from start to finish was excellent. The course was scenic and a great run. The hill half way round is long and drains your legs, but surely this just adds to the experience? I am certainly going to do this again next year. In short: Great run In full: This is a great run and I thought it went well seeing as though this was the first time it took place. It was quite annoying not being able to get past people on the single track so I'd advise pushing to the front at the start if you want to get a good time. Also I prefer to recce a course prior to race day which wasn't an option as the route wasn't published. However I had a great time - even on Bison Hill. Will definitely be back again next year. In short: Big long tiring weary hill In full: Half the race seemed to be steeply uphill and the other half down again. Shame there were no road closures but will certainly be back next year Date of review: November 30, 2009
In short: Could have been better In full: The organistation at the start was a shambles with long queues and the championchip timing didn't seem to be working... Stevenage is not known for it's good looks so the race itself was uninspiring. However it was fairly quick and I got a new PB so I'm happy. There are better races around though and I probably won't do it again... Date of review: November 3, 2008
