In short: Very hilly, and hot In full: Overall it is a good race, but its very hilly - if you're not going up a hill you're running down one. There was very little flat terrain on the course. Not really a race for a pb, although the last mile was probably the flattest. Bit annoying how the weather was hot and sunny, today of all days. Date of review: March 15, 2009
In short: Oh dear In full: After trying to convince myself twice that this is a good race to do, I have to say I will not be doing it again.
Firstly, despite booking 3 months in advance, I never received a pack with my race number, timing chip and instructions. I rang them about this several times in the week leading up to the race, only to be met with the same answerphone message (reassuring that packs were still on their way out) time and time again. The night before the race when the pack still had not arrived, their office was closed. I managed to get the chip etc on the day, despite spending the whole journey worrying about whether I would be allowed to race or not. That said, my chip time which I have now checked is significantly different (i.e. it is wrong) to my actual time - what is the point of doing a race when you cannot even be given a correct official time? I might as well have done a half marathon in the countryside rather than going all the way to Silverstone.
I found the course itself to be very monotonous - I felt like I was going round in circles and every part of the course looked the same. A treadmill would have done the job. I also found myself getting caught up in and being slowed down by large crowds, especially round the corners.
Regarding the finishers bag - surely a runner would be more likely to be of a smaller size, so why were all the t-shirts in Extra Large? Date of review: March 9, 2008
In short: Good Race In full: Overall a good race. Pleased with the fact that it was a single-lap course, unlike a few races I have done in the past. It would have been nicer without the wind blowing, but at least it wasn't icy. My only problem was with the last 160m of the race comprising of bumpy grass rather than tarmac. I found it hard to sprint (as I presume most runners do when near the finish line) and found myself trying not to twist my ankle. That said, however, I would do it again. In short: Good race In full: Overall, it was good. A little bit annoying that the start line was rather far from the race HQ. It wasn't very clear where the finish line was. There should be room (at least 50m) after the finish line for runners to slow down, rather than having to stop suddenly. Its not very wise and could be dangerous for some runners. But other than that, I was pleased with the fact it was a one-lap course, rather than multiple laps. Date of review: January 1, 2008
In short: Good race In full: Good race. Weather a little annoying. It would have been nice if it was a one lap course - considering the rural setting, I can't see it being that hard. Couldn't help but feel all the twists and turns in the showground part of the course could have been simplified, especially all the sharp turns near the end. A long 'home strait'-style finish would have been better. Date of review: December 2, 2007
In short: So-so In full: The almost constant wind was rather annoying. Although the water stations were good, a couple more wouldn't have done any harm.
It doesn't really bother me whether they give mementos/finishers prizes or not, but if they are going to give them out, at least give something that everyone can have - a "commemorative" bottle of beer is not a good idea at all. Not all of us drink alcohol. Not to mention how unhealthy it is, and how dangerous it can be when drunk so soon after a race. Date of review: September 2, 2007
In short: Good race In full: I did like this race - the weather and course were just right. One problem was that the race seemed to start 1 or 2 minutes before 10am - this was frustrating as I was just doing last minute preparations when I realised the race had actually started. I really don't like to be stopped suddenly at the end of a race (especially as I usually sprint the last mile or so)- I didnt like the fact that I was stopped suddenly to give the chip after the race - dangerous for some competitors perhaps? There seemed to be abit of a problem with parking/congestion before and after, but it didnt really bother me. This is something I would do again - bigger races with more competitors are much more exciting. Date of review: June 10, 2007
In short: Good race In full: This was a good race. Different to the usual on-road half marathons. Track a little bumpy in places. Would have been better without the rain/mud. Date of review: May 28, 2007
