In short: Friendly Two Lap Road Event In full: A very friendly event, plenty of chats with people in the car-park and out on the course – every single person I spoke to was using the event as part of marathon preparation. Course wise it was two laps with the first three miles on an airfield then out onto local roads which I would describe as undulating rather than hilly, there were two short uphill sections that a few had to walk but they were very brief. Personally I really liked the airfield section, huge flat wide open space, very different to anything I am used to. The road sections weren’t traffic free but the cars were generally very considerate – it made me appreciate the quieter sections all the more. Fluorescent signs and (soggy but cheerful!) marshalls in all the right places meant taking a wrong turn was impossible. The water was in cups rather than bottles with energy gels and jelly babies also being handed out at the water stations. No goodie bag at the end but a medal and a mars bar along with a bottle of ribena. The inevitable pre race queues for the toilets were helped with urinals for the gents.
Despite having a terrible race I would do the event again, the runners I met were all well prepared with a number of clubs well represented but I wouldn’t say it was elitist, I’m pretty slow but didn’t feel out of place. Date of review: March 14, 2011
