In short: 3 Big Hills, arranged around an Even Bigger One In full: Decided to celebrate not being culled (at least for another year) with a weekend in Snowdonia and a first crack at this much-hyped event. It didn't disappoint: stunning scenery (visible this year, which I gather is not a given by any means); a challenging (but not ridiculous) hilly course with 3 sustained climbs, but plenty of downhill on which to recover; almost seamless organisation (the only slight pain was a couple of spots where I had to weave around mini traffic jams); and excellent support (helped by the unusually good weather, but most welcome). Highlight for me was the last mile or so - steep, "technical" downhill on grass and track to the well-supported finish in Llanberis. If you like fell-type stuff, it makes the slog up the final hill well worthwhile. Super race - well done to all involved in putting it on. Date of review: October 28, 2012

In short: Challenging ascents, cheeky technical downhills - outstanding scenery. In full: Excellent, challenging trail running through some of the most stunning scenery in England (not that I had much opportunity to look at it for long, being either head down on the ups, or concentrating on navigating my ankles safely through the fast downhill sections). Well organised - started pretty much on time, well-marked route and supportive marshals, and (I found, anyway) enough water stations, despite the hot weather, to supplement what I was carrying myself. Good to see finishers sticking around to cheer people on at the end, too. The entry is pricey, as mentioned by others, but I felt I got my money's worth for this one (a less generic medal would be an improvement, but it makes a nice change to get a decent shirt so that evened out for me).
