In short: Freezing but inclusive. In full: A slow beginner here, so my comments will have a different slant to others. It was very well organised and baggage sorted etc well. The 10k overlaps a bit with the half marathon runners who all came up behind very fast on quite narrow parts of the course which was quite intimidating at times. Final signposting to the end for the 10k-ers wasn't' there which was frustrating and the start/end on the grass made me slip all over the place due to the frost but appreciate that that wasn't foreseeable. Very friendly and encouraging marshalling out on the course with chip timing too. Echo the comments about the final section down the high street; the normal pedestrians weren't supportive at all but that was hardly the race organisers' faults.
In short: Hilly, but very friendly runners, and cheerful marshalls made it a good race. In full: As a beginner, it is always scary turning up to races like this, particularly when it is raining, and you know the 'fair weathers' probably aren't going to turn up. I needn't have worried! Well organised chip picking up, and cutting off, and we were off early in order to cut the amount of time we were standing around. Cups of water just before the hill at 5KM were terribly welcome, and the marshalls were really encouraging, and friendly as well as dedicated. Nasty bit on the common at the end due to the mud and puddles, but again warnings from the marshalls made you aware. Finished shaving 10 minutes off my time despite the wind and rain, and felt very pleased! Banana, water, and medal at the end. Not a complete beginner's race unless you have done hills before, as the double hill in the middle is a killer! Date of review: February 28, 2010
In short: Wet and freezing and not flat! In full: A few qualms from the beginners gathering about the terrain which most definitely isn't flat! The course consists of laps round the park which whilst a little tedious espcially when being lapped (!) did enable groups of different runners to meet and cheer each other on. Today's review was influenced by the heavy rain, wind and even hail at one stage, but the two or three marshalls I saw were cheery and the starter, timing were all great. Free tea for everyone but 10 loos (approximately) for so many runners was craziness! Date of review: November 1, 2009
