In short: Well organised scenic race, well worth racing. In full: For a small local race this is one to do. Superb scenery helped by slick organisation made for a great evening out. HQ at a pub (always a good thing) with a BBQ afterwards made for super evening for all the family. The course itself is a lot harder than it appears and is not PB material. But don't let this put you off. Some tough muddy sections really slow you down which balance well with the roads and faster tracks. Will be back next year...thanks guys and girls! In short: Tough as nails course but still a great day out. In full: Great organisation made for fun day out. Very tough course (no chance of a pb but it's hard to compare XC courses) made all the harder today due to the heat. 2 water stations including one with jelly babies was very much appreciated (and needed). Mostly offroad mixed terrain with some roads and 'kissing' gates added to the spice. A small ford less than 1k from the end was a welcoming dip for my hot feet! No medal but instead a bottle of local cider (might not last as long as a medal but tastes so much better!). Not much in the way of facilities with only toilets and a small cafe but this is not a problem as notice was clearly given on entry forms. One of the best local races I have ever entered and one I will come back to again. Well done Chard Running Club. Date of review: May 27, 2012

In short: Friendly small race with excellent scenery, just leave your pb ambitions at home! In full: This is a very small race in rural Wiltshire. Slick organisation made for a stress free day. The route is on a single lap (which is always nice) in a scenic part of the country-very special views at times. There is little chance of a pb on this course as it is constantly undulating with some rather steep hills (especially at the 8km point!). 2 water stations which was a good touch for such a small race. Not much in the way of changing facilities or washing (one small toilet for each sex) so come prepared. Good spectator services with tea/coffee/bacon buties(!) available and a children's playground in the adjoining carpark/field. Previous reviews have pointed out a disappointing memento but it clearly states that you get a cream egg for finishing-no point in moaning if you get what you were told about! Very fast results service. Also has a 5k race and a child's 2k race which is also on a road loop (unusual but good). All in all a very good small race if you live locally or are visiting the area. In short: Without doubt the best race in the UK! In full: Where to start? This is without doubt the best race in the whole UK! The race has been going on for a fair few years now and you have about 24hours to enter before it fills-this is an indication of how successful it is. The organisation is superb before, during and after the event. The course is hard as nails-don't expect a pb, it's meaningless anyway. Shingle beaches, knee deep streams and bogs await in the 20ish miles of never flat (except at the start and finish) constantly hilly (I love/hate the 'stairway to heaven at about 18 miles) and almost totally off road. Being in a tourist area there are plenty of points around the course with huge spectator support. Loads of marshals were hugely supportive and judging by the amount of jelly babies being handed out there's now none left in the area! Once across the finish line brilliant services tend to all your needs including a wash down (very cold hose) by Seaton firemen. There's even a free beer if you are fast enough! I can't wait to come back next year! Date of review: March 20, 2012

In short: I love this race! But it's nails and very tough. In full: This is my third year in a row running this race and I love it! Superb organisation makes for an easy day before and after the race. Secure baggage area and full facilities including showers(although being a school the showers are at shoulder height!). Excellent tea, coffee, cake and sandwich facilities at HQ. Now onto the course and race. Tough as nails course that goes up from the word go to get over a small(!) hill before a steep descent onto a road. After a short while the climb to the summit of Dunkley Beacon begins-it's not that steep but goes on...and on. From teh summit a good long steady descent takes you to the bottom of the sharp descent...that you know go straight back up again. This really hurts! From the top a fast descent takes you back to the start. If the weather was bad this could be a problem due to the exposure on the Dunkley climb. Very friendly marshals and enough water (and jelly baby) stations to get you around. Fairly standard T-shirt to all finishers. I will be back again next year. Date of review: October 23, 2011

2011 New Forest Marathon

In short: Superb organisation on a scenic course made for a wonderful race. In full: Firstly don't be put of by the multi-terrain tag. The off-road sections are on good forest tracks and will barely slow you down if at all. Undulating bordering on hilly course so not one for a pb. The killer hill at 22.5 miles was nasty and made worse by having the photographers near the top so walking was not an option! The route really highlighted the beautiful scenery in this part of the New Forest and was a great distraction from my hurting legs. Excellent organisation made for a stress free race. Secure baggage drop was good. Plenty of water stations but the early ones (that are shared with the half) did get busy. The course marshals worked hard at the frequent road crossings and safely kept the vehicles at bay. Only problem I had was the distance from the finish line to main car park-it was a bit of a round trip to get a shower-not great with sore legs. This did not detract from a superb race with excellent organisation which made for one of my favourite races ever. Nice finishers medal and a technical T-shirt (but you have to buy these and I have no problem with that-it helps to keep the entry fee down). Thanks guys. Date of review: September 26, 2011

2011 Somerset Levels and Moors Marathon

In short: Very tough but good organisation in superb scenery make for a special race. In full: Excellent course mostly on the flat (Somerset Levels) but includes enough hills to make it hard. The hills are super steep especially at 12.5miles! The ploughed fields also slow you down considerably. No chance of a pb but if you do nothing but chase pb's then stick to the road. Plenty of water stations but are bottles ideal? I saw a lot of mostly full bottles thrown on the floor within a hundred yards of the station. A few extra marshals would be helpful too-I saw two groups go wrong. I emailed the organiser and he said that one sign had moved (kids?) and the normal problem of lack of marshals caused these errors. So please suport your clubs by standing out on the course marshalling. Very good facilities at the start/finish area including showers. Very good medal too! And you could buy (at a very good good price) lasts year's quality prize. Will be back next year as I enjoy this race a lot. Date of review: September 19, 2011

2011 ASH EXCELLENT EIGHT
 | | Overall score | | 100% | | Would you do it again? | | Yes | | | | Details: | | Scenery | | 80% | | PB potential | | 40% | | Atmosphere | | 80% | | Organisation | | 100% | | Value | | 80% | | Beginner-friendliness | | 80% |
In short: Very hard last mile but overall an excellent race with superb organisation. In full: This is an excellent race. Only a small event but superb organisation made for a great morning out. Good facilities at the HQ (a junior school) but no showers (not a problem really). A tough course that goes straight downhill for a mile (more on this later) followed by an undulating course including one sharp uphill section. Mostly offroad on good tracks with some grass sections. A heavy downpour the night before made for a few muddy sections but overall a rather fast course-except for the last mile. Not a PB course but most multi-terrain races are not. Now for the last mile...mile 7 puts you at the very bottom of the hill you ran down from the start and it's a big un! Very good organisation at the finish and a nice T-shirt too! I didn't get near one but the winners trophies (a running shoe shaped trophy) looked great. A well stocked cake and sandwich stall rounded off a great little race. I will be back next year. In short: Small race but well organised over scenic course. Lovely! In full: A superb course that was very scenic. Excellent organisation including numerous water stops-not bad for a short(ish) race. A basic medal for finishing but we don't do races like this for medals do we? SO no problem with that. Would do this race again no problem. The organiser also does the Ash Excellent 8 in September and I will be there for that too. Well done. Date of review: July 3, 2011

In short: Slick organisation and good route make for a great day out. In full: The organisation for this race was spot on. Numerous road crossing could of been a nightmare but an excellent number of marshallers made for no troubles at all. Very hot day made for a tough day out. Far from flat course that following a loop close to the start before heading down to Portland Bill lighthouse meant a long 2.5 mile uphill drag back to the start. So not much chance of a pb. Loads of water stations that also included sponges helped with the heat. Received a towel which was different and useful! Would be more than happy to come back next year. Well done.
