In short: Loved it In full: As others have mentioned, 4 laps sounds like it will be dull but it actually makes the race much better and the good atmosphere makes it very enjoyable. The mile 4 marshal was excellent, especially when she had the two little girls singing their chant about 'you're gonna reach the finish line!'
I agree with others that marshals were a mixed bag (including 6 marshals looking after a car on a straight piece of road when the section just before the end of the lap could have done with a few more marshals) but I think it's just because the really enthusiastic marshals made the others look bad!
One recommendation I'd have is moving the water station at mile 0 about half a mile or a mile back round the course to somewhere quieter!
Overall I have to say I really enjoyed it and think the course was well sign posted and very enjoyable - would definitely do it again! Date of review: March 13, 2011
In short: Enjoyable In full: Really enjoyed the GSR, only ever done small runs before as I always thought these big events were too expensive and over crowded but was pleasantly surprised to find that I positioned myself fairly well (there were a few people who tried to go to the front when they were clearly not quick enough and must've felt pretty terrible being passed by 10,000 people!) but overall everything went well and I enjoyed it thoroughly Date of review: October 25, 2010
In short: Very good but a bit of room for improvement... In full: Really good flat race, perfect conditions, and loved the people sitting outside their houses cheering people!
Only complaints are that we were left waiting at the start for over 20mins because there had been a delay but no one could hear the PA (I was relatively near the front and still couldn't hear anything!) and runners weren't separated based on time so the first mile or two was very congested with slow runners! In short: Really enjoyable In full: Flat and fast with ideal conditions! Chatted to another run from 4.5 to 6 miles which helped me forget my tight hamstrings and was really pleased with my time! Scenery is fine and there were people dotted all around the course cheering - the marshalls were really good too! Overall it was very good and I would definitely go again.. In short: Wet, windy and hilly! In full: This was my first half marathon and it isn't very local but the alternative was filled up before I entered so I decided to sign up for Roding Valley.
I didn't realise it was hilly until a few days before but I guess everyone has to start somewhere.. The weather was terrible and the start did seem a little chaotic however the weather really seemed to affect everything - even the mood of other runners! I definitely got the impression everyone wanted to get round and get warm again ASAP!
I found it nice to explore a new area and the downhill section at the end of the big loop was good.. There were people cheering despite the rain which made it enjoyable
Most marshalls were encouraging and very brave! Overall it was enjoyable and the irony is that the weather has been perfect every day since the event! (a week has passed now!) Date of review: March 7, 2010
