In short: Hot and hard but beautiful. In full: Well organised with (fortunately) great weather and support. The hills were tough but where else can you run within touching distance of a fallow deer munching on tree leaves? The only constructive criticism I would give would be to have paper cups next year, not plastic. Date of review: May 7, 2013
In short: Got a pb in trying circumstances In full: Mentioned by others but I will give my opinion:
1. Toilet queues in the start area - odd. 2. Turn the loud music off just before the start. I couldn't hear any of the announcements and had no idea the race had started if it wasn't for the general forward movement of everyone else. 3. Idiots who can't read starting in the wrong section. Annoying. I ran the inaugural Brighton Marathon this year and they used colour coded numbers which worked like a charm. It meant far fewer people ran from the wrong section and I didn't spend half my race running around them. Some had stopped to walk after a mile! 4. Sections of the course were too narrow for the number of runners. This may be alleviated if the issue above was resolved. The numbers of didn't thin out until about 5 miles. 5. Couldn't see any mile markers. I think I spotted the 5 and 10 markers but that was it. Not a huge problem since I had my Garmin but could cause issues for others. 6. Course did seem a tad too short. Thought it was just my Garmin but too many others on here have mentioned it for it to be a coincidence. 7. The bins to drop your chip in after the race were being used for rubbish!! I managed to find one that only had a couple of discarded plastic bottles already in them but I expect many were lost under a pile of banana peels and gel packets. 8. The goody bag at the end was poor. Why no t-shirt? It must be the only race where you don't get a t-shirt at the end.
1. I got a pb in spite of the congestion and issues at the start. 2. I liked the new course. Very flat and coming over the barrage towards the end was brilliant. 3. The baggage was super smooth. Good to see that the disaster of last year was acted on. 4. Weather was great for the second year running. I know the organisers can't take credit for this but it does help.
May not be able to do this next year as it will be clashing with the Chester Marathon, but I would have run it again. Just please listen to the complaints otherwise you'll put off the serious runners. Date of review: October 18, 2010
