In short: some things better, some things worse
In full: run all 4 now, i really like Brighton, and lots of features of this race. also, i hate to moan. but, making us travel to the expo is a con, nothing changes on the boring Portslade loop despite the obvious medical access risks, and worst of all the route out from the exit area is now very much longer. I needed the station, as encouraged, but they added about 3/4 mile on the the route, which was no joke

In short: not hot this year, and a bit less zing overall. still a top event
In full: great organisation again, although less music on the course and general stuff going on, but still a great effort. odd to see the hills mentioned, they are mere slopes! i didnt get on with the water pouches - fiddly and hard to get anything out of the bottom half. crowded at points but never enough to be a problem and just enough to chat any time

In short: still getting better. fixed the finish, now just the start
In full: pros: finish is now by the sports centre, ideal for a shower (small technical detail though - see below), friendly, well-organised, great scenery, I like loops, sensible start time, perfect weather (not guaranteed every time), hills mainly not too bad.
cons: cold showers (although now a short walk from the finish - see above), no chip timing, bit of a walk to the start, hills occasionally nasty

In short: the alternative cambridge ring road. path, track, field, garden, car park, towpath
In full: finally on RW events, a real one-off organised by the cambridge university students. starting on the east side of the town from a sports centre (moving to a hotel in 2012) we follow a circular route through a village, up the only longish slope on a road before diving across the fields, through a wood, round addenbrookes hospital across the first of two level crossings (yep, had to wait for a train), through an estate, across a main road (no help, it's casual, take care), village, charming river path, main road (pavement), more field paths to the half way mark. most runners drop out here and take a coach back leaving a thinned out field to take on more of the same, mainly off road. great run for variety, flat, friendly, signed by hash-style flour markings with a handy map you'll need(i went off course both years i've run this and in the same place - doh!), not many drinks stations but just enough. start a thread if i can tempt you more, or better still come and join us!

In short: good to be back, more winter marathons please
In full: agree with chip mat and bottle comments, plus superb marshalls. this is a neat race, if a little unlucky in recent years and I hope it takes up a regular slot back in december where it belongs!

In short: well done Brighton; top event getting closer to being brilliant but not much bigger please
In full: enough said by the others, but:

- tell the park n riders there was masses of space at three bridges (£1 all day parking)and the trains were find
- kemp town stretch was tight - couldnt we hit the front earlier?
- not bothered by the mental challenge of shoreham, but getting medical support on/off in an emergency is a serious consideration
- well done on the water, drinks, showers, loos (although if everyone had turned up...)
- special thanks to the hose piper

see you next year

In short: very well organised, brilliantly marshalled, varied but flat route, great event
In full: superb marshals with some tricky crossings made easy, enthusiastic water stations, great facilities. i'd prefer water bottles in the last 10 -isotonics are a bit sweet and plastic cups just dont do it by that stage. otherwise great event

In short: significant weaknesses still mar an overall much improved event
In full: good stuff: friendly field, dedicated marshals, bottled water, off roadness, saturday race, finishes near my house, starts near a station, easy registration.
not so good; baggage coach - unhelpful driver, unhelpful place, footbridge was avoidable (i work in the rail industry, we are usually happy to help here), country park route mayhem, sports bottle tops much preferred (feel entitled at £27), silly loops at the end with dodgy obstacles underfoot; was it really 26.2?
i really hope the organisers arent too disheartened by some of the feedback on here - although it is brutally accurate - because if it keeps improving this could be a great run. the idea of starting in Hertford, or nearby could be a cracker. i may just run that anyway

In short: no frills, no thrills, friendly, steady race by runners for runners
In full: the Royton tribute to Ian Casey
runners down -

My respect to the Royton runners remembering their colleague Ian. Due respect was paid to him on each lap where I sadly saw him fall last year. Struggling on by for the last time and thinking about the final few hills, I did ask if he could help me - the mind was starting to addle a bit - and I duly perked up. It may have been the gels, but that will always be his corner and a place to inspire those of us privileged enough to plod the planet a little longer.

thanks also to the marshalls in the cold and the intrepid supporters who hung on even after we lost the sun. good to see extra toilets, although a sign would help and the registration and announcements were all reassuringly improvised.
good company on the road and the route straightforward and winter-pretty. how did the runner on the extra lap manage to do that or did i imagine that and the SJA guys stopping him?

In short: very friendly, well organised and runner-based race. better than average
In full: marshalls out in an unhelpful wind for hours but still cheerful and positive says it all really. loops not exactly inspiring but varied enough, not lonely with the relay runners buzzing around, and nice n safe
