In short: Challenging well organised race - great views.. In full: Well done to Julian and Macc Harriers for organising this race especially for a very good cause i.e. East Cheshire Hospice. Quite hard work after the first mile but all downhill and flat after 4 miles. Cracking views on reaching the top of the climb and then on the way back.. Enjoyed the beer once I got home.. In short: A brilliant race once again In full: Despite the wet and windy weather, this was a brilliant and very well organised race - thanks to everyone who continue help to make this happen. There were plenty of spectators to cheer us along, Stoke people are a hardy bunch. I struggle to think of another race that I enjoy more, bring it on next year. Lastly, thanks again to Bryan Dale who turns out rain, wind or shine to take such good photos! Date of review: June 13, 2011
In short: A very scenic and well organised marathon In full: This was my first marathon and I enjoyed every minute of it, rural and very scenic. I did have some trepidation about the race having read previous reviews so if anyone is thinking of doing this don't let the following put you off:
1/ Drinks stations - there are plenty of them. Yes, most of them use plastic cups but that's not a big deal, if you slow down a bit you can get more than enough to hydrate.
2/ It's hilly - no it's not! If you want hilly come to North Staffs where I live and run. There are a couple of "slight" inclines that you have to do twice, no big deal as the rest of the course is flat.
3/ The Greenway - yes it's long and if it's a hot day, yes it could sap your energy. But it's mind over matter and you do know what to expect second time round.
4/ No goodie bag, poor medal etc - So what, it's an achievement just to do complete a marathon, that's enough of a prize. I think it was very good value and if it helps to keep the cost down then I'm not bothered about freebies.
5/ Lack of atmosphere - it's a rural race, you are hardly likely to have thousands of people lining every mile where there are no houses etc. The support in the town, the villages and at the finish was great.
Lastly, if you train and prepare properly you will have no problems with this race and I'd recommend this for a first marathon.
Finally, thanks to the the runners I spoke to and helping to encourage me i.e. Jules and Stewart/Stuart during the final 10 miles.. Date of review: May 8, 2011
In short: Shame about the weather but a good one nevertheless In full: My first time running this too so was disappointed not to do the real thing. But the alternative route was very scenic in all the snow so it was still worth effort. Some great fancy dress as well.. Date of review: December 20, 2009
In short: Fantastic race In full: Second time I've done this and, once again, really enjoyed it. Really good scenery, great marshalls and the extra challenge of the boggy ground this year.. Terrific stuff. Date of review: December 7, 2009
In short: Very good race, good for first timers In full: First time I've done this race and I'm glad I did. Good conditions, nice scenery and relatively flat, the sting at 12 miles isn't anything to worry about if you're used to hills. Will do this one again next year! Date of review: October 11, 2009
In short: Very friendly with good PB potential In full: First time doing this race, very fast as the vast majority of the course is flat. Nice quiet country lanes apart from a big tractor about half way :) I was a little surprised that the field was so small but it was a good race which was well organised so will do it again. In short: Nice and hilly with fantastics views In full: First time doing this and I really enjoyed it, hill training is a must for anyone thinking of doing this next year. Great views especially on that fast finish. Date of review: August 10, 2009
In short: Fantastic half marathon - great crowd support In full: This is my local half marathon and my very first competetive one and I have to say the whole experience was amazing. Yes it was hot and there were one or two steep hills but overall I really enjoyed the experience and will be back next year. I felt very honuoured to get a silver medal.. Well done to Don Shelley and all involved for a very well organised race! Date of review: June 14, 2009
In short: A good race with plenty of ups and downs - literally In full: A pleasant enough evening but a little windy on some parts of the course. Well organised and marshalled. Not the most exciting race but this does give you the opportunity for claiming a new PB which I did.. Date of review: May 6, 2009
