In short: Top notch event In full: Really well organised, very friendly crowd. I too wondered about the multi lap venue, but it means you're never alone, which really helps. It also meant that I went further than I planned - made it to 20-miles, but would definitely consider this again if I can stay clear of injuries next year - I want a nice chunky medal! There's enough variation in each lap to keep it interesting, up and down and twists and turns. Well done the organisers! Date of review: June 1, 2013

In short: Boy that was tough! In full: Said before, but very hard going today. A tough course, truly undulating course with only one major hill early on, but with very little on the flat. Most marshals were very encouraging, with excellent traffic control at some potentially scary junctions. Great race HQ at the school. Nice to get a technical top. The only downer is the organisers seemed caught out by the unseasonably warm weather - which had been expected all week - and should really have had more water stops. I hope that the two runners I saw in real trouble turned out ok. On the whole, well done Striders. Date of review: October 2, 2011

In short: Cracking event - onother superb race from Thanet Roadrunners In full: Another superb race from Thanet Roadrunners - there can't be much like this elsewhere. 15-odd miles of sand, dunes, stones (boy, were they tough!), seaweed, water, chalk, steps and a bit of tarmac. Weather was glorious, marshalls were great as always. Even good cheer from the locals on a Sunday stroll along the beach. A real shame is the number of entrants - this really deserves a bigger field. I'd love another run, if it stays on the calendar...... Date of review: September 18, 2011

In short: Cracking day in the Essex Countryside! In full: Thoroughly enjoyed my run today. Going great guns until around 21, but the heat and hills (which I hadn’t noticed on the first lap!) took their toll, but kept going (unlike my previous marathon…) and I came in a few minutes behind target. Tough course for a pb, but came in only a minute behind. Glorious weather, for supporters, wonderful countryside, no hills too bad, except on tired legs, excellent marshalls, great goody bag. Thanks to Halstead for a very well organised event! Date of review: May 9, 2011

In short: Hills, mud, clay and stiles In full: I had planned a 20 mile training run this weekend, before I heard a few others were heading up for this. I’ve never run this kind of event before, and after the first few miles, I wondered what the heck I’d let myself in for! Hilly, muddy for the first third or so, more conventional for the next third, and then sticky clay fields with loads of stiles for the final third. Very glad to have finished, but kept on and would never had had this much fun on a local 20 mile LSR! Date of review: March 6, 2011

In short: hilly and windy, but very enjoyable! In full: I enjoyed this, despite a very tough first half, don't recall much on the flat, and into the wind with few hedges to break shelter behind - all that kept me going was the thought that surely it must be behind me eventually! Very well organised, plenty of water stations and marshalls. Not a big fan of mugs myself, but each to his own - at least this had a mars bar in! And 2 mins off my pb so can't argue with that! Well done Deal Tri! Date of review: February 13, 2011

In short: Great course, but a few things could be better In full: Not done this for a couple of years, but great course. Ran better than expected following a brief lay off, but couldn't make all of the hill at 4! Very fast last two miles or so. Not good that there was no water at finish already mentioned, and having a few people in front down the approach to the finish, I just couldn't see the line until I was past it! Mug and voucher not good value. If they re-worked the end, I'd consider coming back. Date of review: February 13, 2011

In short: Tough race of two tough halves In full: No problems with parking - we took heed and arrived nice and early for the school car park. Checked out the route to the start in our warm up, so that was ok, but glad we didn’t leave that too late. First half on very narrow pavements with lots of verges and fast cars not ideal – very well done to the marshals there! Second half much better though the countryside. Very challenging with all that up and down - I was expecting, or maybe hoping for, a bit more downhill in the last 3 miles! I ran a fairly even pace all told, and not far outside my pb, set at Folkestone, which is a very different beast, so pretty happy with that all told. As mentioned, the goody bag, sorry bag, was a big disappointment. Date of review: October 18, 2010

In short: Tough race, but I'd love another go next year! In full: As mentioned, a race of two halves, hilly first half, with which I was familiar, and a flat second. Much warmer than expected (and hoped!) it would be, with a stiff sea breeze so familar around here. Carried my own fluid for the first half, but (ample) bottles and gels very much appreciated for the second. Very encourgaing marshalls, often decked out with jelly babies. Lovely course - yes it may have been a bit residential coming into the final quarter, but the way I was feeling it was better to see a friendly marshall's face! I was so concerned about overdoing the first half that I ran well within myself and was feeling very good going into the second, but completely underestimated the mental effect of running much more alone after halfway. The heat took its toll, and then turning back for the last quarter into the wind (which I'm sure wasn't that strong when it was behind...) was the final straw, and the legs fell off at 23, and I then struggled ovr the last 2-3 miles. Never mind, eh - my first marathon in over 10 years, second fastest of my five, and I'll be better prepared mentally and physically next year. Date of review: September 12, 2010

In short: very hot, very hilly, small friendly race In full: Lovely course, friendly marshalls, extra water welcome. Didn't seem any respite from up and/or down, but after a quick start, I had three very slow kms from 5-8, before a quick last two kms. That short sharp slope within the last 400m finished me off, though! I managed a tad quicker than last year, so I'll take that, given how much hotter it was. Could question 11 am start as with other of these hot runs in recent weeks, but who's to know what the weather will be when you organise! Bit tight on the goodies - I'd have loved a beer like the guy lower down - but I, or at least the kids when I get too many, can always use a kit bag like that given here, I've got plenty of medals and decorating T-shirts already! Nice to get free entry into gardens - made a trip of it with the family. Would definitely consider coming again, possibly weather permitting. Date of review: July 12, 2010
