In short: You will never find friendlier marshals! In full: First time doing the race; as a former ORR I spent the previous years volunteering. It's true what they say about the marshals, those yellow shirts make everyone feel special and have a whale of a time in the process!
It's a tough run but that makes it all the more satisfying for having done it. Forget about a PB for this one and embrace this little gem.
Very minor comment; I like to see a male urinal at races as it really takes the pressure off portaloos. It didn't affect me but the queues were getting quite long in the leadup to the race.
In short: Brilliant community atmosphere and a smooth race In full: The whole morning was brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The race was well marshalled and the road crossings all seemed fine. The water at the end and the grub in the goody bags was much appreciated.
A couple of minor points. The school loos couldn't really handle the volume nor were they signposted as well as perhaps they might have been. The race was an early sellout but it wasn't obvious on the front page of the website, which led to people turning up and moaning. Nothing to detract from the day though and I would certainly do it again. Date of review: October 23, 2014
In short: Surely one of Kent's finest races and a great day out In full: Well organised with gorgeous scenery and friendly updates from the race director in the run up to the day. The route is relatively challenging and although the temperature was cooler this year the ground conditions give you a mix of hard, uneven terrain, slippy shallow mud, grass and a bit of road.
It's a great day out with beer, cakes and a brass band at the end. Sunday was my 4th outing so that surely speaks volumes about how much I rate this run.
Very minor criticisms: A couple of more loos at race HQ probably would have went down well, and the t-shirt was quite average. I've got so many of the things now that I prefer no t-shirt at all over one that won't get worn. It's still good value and absolutely will not stop me coming back again though. In short: Deserving of its reputation In full: I'm no stranger to hilly trail runs and I was aware of the comments regarding the difficulty of this course, but this was still a toughie in the blazing heat.
This event is well organised, the atmosphere is great, the marshalls were fab and the music, tea and cakes at the end just add to the incredible charm of this run.
If you keep your head up some of the scenery on this route will make your jaw drop. This is a special one. Date of review: June 22, 2014
In short: results not published? how bizarre In full: The organisers do their best but the logistics are clearly challenging. Runners and spectators face long walks for transport but the buses are speedy and plentiful. The course was fine although quite windy this year. Crowd support was very good.
What was hugely disappointing was the organiser's decision not to publish results. This is just bizarre for a large running race (the website states clearly that the event is not a fun run). Not in the spirit of the sport at all and a big black mark against the event. Date of review: May 27, 2014
In short: Charming local affair that made for an excellent morning In full: I'm glad I entered in advance as for the first time this race sold out. I'm not surprised as surely its reputation for being a great event finally reached enough ears.
The course is great and it was surprising to find so much 'rural' land in the middle of a built-up area. The ground conditions were dry but quite challenging but that's my type of race.
This event ran like clockwork despite what appeared to be a quite modest event team. A great run and I would definitely recommend it. Date of review: May 5, 2014
In short: A very special and humble event deserving of a visit In full: This was my third time at the Darent Valley 10k and it's a great little run through country lanes and little villages with very respectable crowd support for the size of the event. There are a couple of hills to contend with so not the quickest of courses but it's the atmosphere of this race that makes it so special.
Well done to the organisers and volunteers. Putting in extra effort to protect runners from the potholes at the start really showed you guys care about putting on a good run. Date of review: April 7, 2014
In short: Fairly poor organisation - smelled very much like the work of non-runners In full: A small pub is not a great HQ for a race expecting around 400 runners (limit 500), all of whom have to pick their number up on race day. The volume of people made it difficult to get to number pickup and to bag drop and large queues formed outside. To their credit the organisers delayed the start of the race in acknowledgement of the inadequate setup.
The lack of a megaphone or PA system meant that the instructions at the start were inaudible. At least there was a klaxxon available to start the race.
Loos were just about sufficient but the portaloos were tucked away and not signposted which led to them being underutilised whilst the pub and public toilets were overutilised.
The course was pleasant enough on quiet country roads. Pretty flat course but more like 50-60 meters of climbing rather than the advertised '6'.
Marshalls on the course were friendly but the HQ volunteers were a bit snotty. I assume this was because they were feeling the pressure.
Below average value. I expect much better for £15. I've been to local races organised by running clubs for a couple of quid that would put this one to shame. Wouldn't do it again. Date of review: February 23, 2014
In short: Great fun in a popular park In full: Second time I've done this one and I'm surprised it doesn't fill up each time as it's a great local event. It's hard work but the course is interesting and challenging. Beckenham are a friendly, welcoming club too and the marshalls were brilliant. Date of review: November 10, 2013
In short: Friendly and organised - the two most important things for me In full: Well organised and friendly race with a good atmosphere. We were fortunate with a nice day and although it's on roads they were mostly quiet with patient drivers. Not a quick course but good for teaching those who go out too fast a thing or two.
