In short: Beautiful Location, Great if hilly course In full: A nice friendly race in a superb location. Course is challenging with several steep climbs. 3 out and back laps means that it is a sociable event, easy to keep tabs on fellow runners and not feel deserted Date of review: February 27, 2012
In short: Didn't light my fire In full: The delays were an issue, but a lot of people had managed to get there on time, and it still took 35 minutes to get everyone over the start line, so why not go for it
The lack of goody bags seemed pointless and gimmicky - for those that ran fast enough there were plenty of cereal bars etc, but that just lead to everyone grabbing handfuls, hence the comments below about others missing out. Either give stuff out - to everyone, or don't.
A small thing, but I also found the mile markers really misleading, given they were up to 200 yards apart - which one do I take my time from? Date of review: September 26, 2010
In short: Good race - some small things need tightening In full: This is the first time I have competed in my local half marathon - I have just considered it too hot, hilly and therefore scary before!
It is hilly - no absolute monsters, but lots of rolling inclines, and it was quite warm as well, but beyond that it is a fun race. The final mile and a half downhill suddenly brings the PBs back into contention.
A couple of basics in the organisation just knock it down a bit - whilst there were not that many in the half marathon (2.5k) the 5k, walking half and fun run all add to the numbers, and a dozen loos is simply not enough - the queue was massive. Fortunately, the park has a river running through it...
Similarly the bag collection was well intentioned, but overrun and therefore slow.
Enough of the winges - good scenery, well marshalled, lots of water stops and a challenging course. A medal, t-shirt and ice lolly means a reasonable number of goodies as well Date of review: June 15, 2010
In short: Tough conditions, but a good friendly race In full: The weather was hideous, the course challenging, but a great, well organised training race - thanks to the Marshalls who cheerfully stuck with it! Date of review: February 28, 2010
In short: Great excuse to get out this time of year! In full: Following some doubt as to whether the race would happen at all, I was delighted it did.
A big thank you to the organisers, and marshalls for turning out for us on a very cold day. Course had some reasonable climbs and good scenery after going round the houses for the first 3 miles - literally.
The start was fairly shambolic - no-one had too much idea where it was, or which way we were going, and the motorist trying to come through as the race started was a joke! Date of review: December 28, 2009
In short: Great route but slippery In full: A great route along the canal - flat but with some tricky slopes up to the locks and bridges. The rain and leaves did mean it was slippery, but not too uneven.
Short of toilets at the start, and the baggage van was a bit of a disaster - long wait at the start, and did not turn up at the finish until c. 2 hours Date of review: November 8, 2009
In short: Interesting mix of terrain but fun race In full: A good race through generally rolling hillside but tricky hill about 4km. Quite congested early on, and a lot of mixed terrain - fields, farm tracks etc. but good fun Date of review: October 11, 2009
