In short: Set to become a 'clasic' In full: A real challenging race in a perfect situation. Minor niggles aside, this has the makings of a classic race. Really friendly organisational team, great facilities, supportive marshals, goodies at the end and at the feed stations. It was thoughtful to provide 'iced water' just in case it was hot! ;-)
I'd thoroughly recommend it for next year when, I'm sure this year's teething troubles will be sorted. Date of review: November 29, 2010

In short: You're out of order, Anthony! In full: Okay, so the lack of toilets was a pain in the .... so maybe you should have got there a bit earlier and gone when there were no queues. Overall, a really good race with plenty of support and good marshalling along the way. Good quality runners at the head of the race but with plenty of novices further down the field - very beginner friendly if that's what was required but a great 'marathon sharpener' for the quick boys. Personally, I liked the laps of the business park - running on flat, fast roads with plenty of support and no cars. Ah well, each to their own.... Date of review: April 6, 2007

In short: This is becoming a classic - getting better every year. In full: This race is becoming one of the early season classics. The course is very fair and gives a good idea of the lovely scenery of rural South Hertfordshire - Watford so often gets a bad press. If you fancy running a negative split then this is the course to do it on! The hills are short, sharp and mostly in the first half - something to keep you interested... Plenty of PB's and course records in both Male and Female categories - 1:04odd on a course like that is sensational running! Date of review: February 8, 2007

In short: Great race, fantastic scenery (not that you get much of a chance to admire it!). Must rank as one of the best value races in the UK calender. In full: Challenging fell-type run over glorious Yorkshire Dales countryside. The term 'Marathon' is a bit of a misnomer as it's (only!) 25 miles - maybe the excellent route could be cunningly extended by 1.2 miles? Overall a great race and superb value for money with slick organisation, good quality tee shirt and hot meal with choice of delicious desserts included in the £12 entry fee. Should become a classic! 2006 Halstead & Essex Marathon

In short: Surprisingly hilly, great support along the way, organisation first class. In full: As only my second marathon after running in the Three Forts 2 weeks ago I rather underestimated how tough this would be. Set a Half Marathon PB for the first half and started suffering almost immediately afterwards. The last 6 miles felt incredibly long and when the marshall flagged me to turn left across the fields at 25.5 miles I thought he was taking the p**s! Great event though and hit my target time - next time I'll give it a bit more respect! Date of review: May 14, 2006

In short: 'Interesting' introduction to marathon running - a p.b. though as it was my first one! In full: A great day out in the South Downs - many thanks to the organisers for putting on the event. Signposting was (almost) faultless and despite the early drizzle we were rewarded with some great views. Hills are tough - especially the downhills towards the end but'it's the same for everyone' as I kept saying to myself! Date of review: April 30, 2006

In short: Scenic 20 miler, challenging in the wind. In full: Very pleasant run around the Bedfordshire countryside. Not really 'hilly' but plenty of ups and downs to keep you working. High winds on exposed sections made the 2006 race particularly tough. Date of review: April 3, 2006
